If the story of DKTE could be summarized in 5 words, it would be “Becoming Unshakeable through the Storm.” Why? Because in 1980, when the decentralization of power loom Industry in Ichalkaranji, a western region in Maharashtra, was taking place at a breakneck pace, there was a dearth of institutes that provided good technical education that could cater to the industry’s need of skilled technical man power. This is where nine co-operative organizations from Ichalkaranji stepped up and banded under the leadership of Mr. K. B. Awade in 1981 to form an Education Society. This Society was named after Shri Dattajirao Kadam, a veteran leader and an ardent co-operator, and who was instrumental in the development of the Textile Industry in Ichalkaranji. Thus, the Dattajirao Kadam Technical Education Society, popularly known as DKTE, came in to existence with a view to start institutes and colleges to cater to technical education in the field of textiles, engineering, management and other related disciplines.
DKTE Society started its Textile and Engineering Institute with a Diploma course in Textiles on 26 September1982 on a no grant basis in the State of Maharashtra. In the year 1983–84, 2 degree courses were introduced, and in the course of time, diploma, degree and post-graduate level programs and Ph.D. research centers were started under the affiliation of Shivaji University Kolhapur.
Carving a Niche for Itself through Persistence and Determination
DKTE Society’s Textile & Engineering Institute has been catering to the needs of the industry for the past twenty five years, and has carved a niche for itself amongst the reputed engineering institutes in the country, emphasizing value-based technical education to the aspirants who wish to enter the area of corporate world and be on the helms in the twenty first century. A prime testimony to this would be that every year several students figure in the merit list of Shivaji University, of which 20+ are gold medalists, and that the institute has so far seen 100% placement of textile students and above 85% for engineering students at both National and International level.
The institute boasts of a team of highly experienced and dedicated faculty with good student-to-faculty ratio, excellent state-of-art infrastructure facilities like workshops, laboratories and a library that is equipped with specially designed multimedia digital library, significant number of e-journals, more than 70,692 books, more than 15,317 National and International Journals. The classrooms are equipped with a video conference facility and 24/7 high speed internet connectivity (155 Mbps) with 4G Wi-Fi Connectivity.
Creating Roseate Alliances for Students’ Benefit
The institute also enjoys collaborations with leading foreign universities like Eastern Michigan University (USA), North Carolina State University (USA), Troy University (USA), DeVry University (USA), Canyatta University (Canya), University of California Los Angeles (USA), CopperBelt University (Zambia), Busitema University (Uganda), The School of Technology (Indonesia). Honchschule Niederrhin University (Germany), Chinenkuo Technology University (Taiwan), Technical University of Laberec (Czech Republic), Wuhan university (China), Yeungnam University, Gyeongsan (South Korea), and Chonnam National University, Gwanju (South Korea). The institute also has signed various MoU with educational institutions such as SGGS Institute of Engineering & Technology (Nanded), BVBCET College of Engineering and Technology (Hubballi), College of Engineering Pune (COEP-Pune), and industry leaders such as ACMIT, Rieter, Smit, ITEMA, FONG, DOGETECH, Microsoft, AGTECK, Bharat Forge, Himmatsingka, Dyster, BASF, IBM, Infosys, Jade Global, Zensar Technologies, IIT Bombay, and Texas Instruments for training and R & D.
The institute has been granted Autonomy, thus paving way for effective curricular enrichment, modification, and in addition, this further paves way for incorporating inputs from various stake holders. Along the same lines, the institute has imbibed outcome-based education systems and encourages the use of MOOCS and Moodles among students. Similarly, ICT-based learning is implemented for effective teaching and learning. Flip class rooms are planned under Autonomous Status, and the Use of e-Journals is effectively implemented for UG/PG students. On the Examination and Evaluation front, the institute makes applies Open book test, online evaluation, and project based learning.
The ISO 9001-2015 certified institute has established an “Entrepreneurship Development Cell” (EDC), which has been sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The cell intends to (i) act as an institutional mechanism for providing various services including information to budding Science & Technology entrepreneurs; (ii) create Entrepreneurial culture in the parent institution and other; (iii) catalyze and promote development of S & T based enterprises and promote employment opportunities, and (iv) respond effectively to the emerging challenges and opportunities both at national and international level relating to SMEs and micro enterprises.
DKTE has also established a Business Incubator, which is supported by Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), Development commissioner, New Delhi. Under this scheme MSME- DKTE Business intends to incubate ten new ideas over the period of next four years. Similarly, the Technology Business Incubator (TBI) project is meant to encourage and support technologist/entrepreneurs to turn their innovative ideas in to sound commercial ventures.
Setting Milestones with Unwavering Focus
Moving forward, DKTE Society’s Textile & Engineering Institute has set its focus on obtaining the Deemed University status from UGC. “This will help us to establish multidisciplinary centers to offer innovative, flexible PG, PhD Programs on high demand areas for simulating and vibrant learning experience,” says Dr. Kadole Pradyumkumar Vasant. Along the same lines, the institute plans on obtaining programs for student and faculty exchange and to have joint degree programs and twinning programs. Additionally, the institute is planning to start more Industry Sponsored Laboratories and Center of Excellences in upcoming technologies and to strengthen the existing CoE by getting NABL accreditation for providing testing services to society, and also to have International accreditation from the agencies like ABET USA to enhance academics & placement opportunities.
