In 1966, Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed Khan founded The Al-Ameen Movement with the vision to impart quality education to the underprivileged section of the society. This movement then led to the formation of Al-Ameen Educational Society which has now completed 50 years of meritorious service and runs over 200 institutions. Dr. Subhan Shariff is now leading the Al-Ameen Educational Society as its Hon. Secretary and rendering his dedicated services for the institution. Offering invaluable services to the educational community, the society established the Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy in 1982. The institute was started with the primary objective of providing the best possible pharmacy education and to be a nurturing ground for pharmacy professionals. Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy currently offers courses such as Diploma of Pharmacy (D.Pharm), Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm), Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) along with the Post-Baccalaureate program (Pharm.D P.B.), Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in various specialties.
Giving Due Importance to R&D
The institute conducts research activities in various departments like Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacy Practice, and Quality Assurance. Some of the highlights of the cutting-edge research activities that the institute is currently engaged in include:
- The Pharmaceutics department is working on advanced drug delivery systems, nanoparticulate drug targeting approaches, and novel multiparticulate delivery platforms.
- The Pharmacology department is working on the screening of drugs for the treatment of chronic ailments, such as osteoporosis, diabetes mellitus, and its complications such as erectile dysfunction, neuropathy, nephropathy, and cognitive impairment.
- The Pharmaceutical Chemistry department is working in the area of computational chemistry, synthesis, and studying the biological activities of newer compounds like anti-inflammatory agents, antibiotics, antioxidants, etc.
- The Pharmacy Practice department is actively working in the areas of clinical pharmacokinetics, pharmacovigilance and pharmacoeconomics.
Similarly, the institute has carried out revenue generating research projects with pharmaceutical companies like Navitas Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd. and Wipro Cosmetics Division. These projects facilitate a two way utilization of resources. While the companies use the institute’s research infrastructure, the students of Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy receive training from these companies. Further, the institute has also entered into fruitful tie-ups with other pharmaceutical companies, which promotes the students to pursue their dissertation research and internship. It is quite clear by the number of research activities taking place at the institute that Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy has its infrastructural facilities on point. “Our institute is instilled with the state-of-art infrastructure that includes 13 AV-equipped lecture halls, over 15 research laboratories distributed in each of the specialty department, a machine room with the recent manufacturing technology, an animal house approved by the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPSEA), discussion and seminar halls to cater the discussions of post graduate students and research scholars, and an information centre with an exhaustive collection of reference books and scientific journals. The institute also has a HELINET subscription with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, which provides an exhaustive access to e-journals. Further, the Pharmacy Practice department is housed in St. Philomena’s Hospital, and is equipped with a state-of-art drug information centre and pharmacovigilance centre. Our staff ensures that these provisions are upgraded from time to time to enable the students to benefit the most from the recent updates in scientific research,” says Dr. Shobha Rani R. Hiremath, Principal.
A testimony to the efficacy of the institute’s Teaching-Learning methodology is the number of the corporate giants who flock to the institute during the recruitment season. Some of the notable names are: Quintiles, Indegene, Novo Nordisk, Ranbaxy, Astra Zeneca, Pfizer, Torrent, Dr. Reddy’s Labs, Eli- Lilly India Ltd, Pasteur India Ltd, Cipla, Accenture, and leading hospitals like Apollo Hospitals, Manipal Hospitals, etc. “Our institute has a very actively running placement cell which holds a very successful placement record. Over 90% of our students have been placed in reputed companies and hospitals through our campus recruitments,” adds the Principal.
Awardee of the 2016 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for pharmacy colleges by the ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy has also been accredited twice by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The College has received “Excellence award in Pharma Education” in 2018 by HR club, Mumbai. Moving forward, Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy aims to continue its routine of setting higher standards in pharmaceutical education and research, and working hard to be recognized as the premier pharmacy institute not only in Karnataka, but in India.

In Life there are moments. And then there are moments that change one’s Life……
My life changing ‘moment’ was when I enrolled for the ‘Bachelors’ program at Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy ‘AACP’, some 25 years back. Then on there has been no looking back. Today, I head a ‘Formulation Development’ division of a reputed Canadian Pharmaceutical company ‘Sterimax Inc.’ and am based out of Toronto. After my Bachelors, I went on to complete my Masters and Doctorate in ‘Pharmaceutics’ from AACP.
My decade long training at AACP has been ‘the’ instrumental factor in successfully integrating to a Western way of doing research. At ‘Al-Ameen’ it is about preparing one to face the professional challenges of a Pharmaceutical Research domain. The college is well equipped to train students in all of the modern research techniques and more notably in novel drug delivery systems (NDDS) which today is a major area of focus in ‘Big Pharma’ world-wide.
Professors at AACP are well trained and excel in providing hands-on oriented teaching. I take this opportunity to specifically mention Prof. Shobha Rani R.H, Principal, AACP who has been my ‘Academic Mentor’ and continues to be my ‘Professional Mentor’ till day. Life-long mentorships are a way of life at ‘Al-Ameen’. I am indeed a proud ‘Alumnus’ and wish my ‘Alma mater’ many more successful years in shaping the future of tomorrow’s Pharmaceutical Scientists.
Dr. Raman Dang, Registrar, Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DIPSAR): “Al-Ameen is a paradise for quality learning. Work culture and teachers’ dedication are its biggest assets. Management’s free hand has made Al-Ameen possible to grow in each passing year. Each alumnus cherishes being part of Al-Ameen. Our foundation is strong, so our growth is uniform.”
Dr. Arun Abraham Easow, Head, Strategic Initiatives, Digital A Plus Healthcare, KL, Malaysia. “The highlight of my educational endeavor was to study the Masters in Pharmacy Practice in Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy, Bangalore. It gave me a chance to enter into multiple pharmaceutical avenues that I did not know existed at the time. The faculty and the facilities provided by the college management was rightly suited to match with the changing pharmaceutical landscape and prepared me for being competitive in the employment market. I will always cherish my learning and teachers that supported the initiation of my professional journey.”
