Though India is feted globally as “pharmacy to the world”, some of the biggest names in the local industry have come in for some serious criticism from foreign regulators. And the reasons vary, from the absence of data integrity to not adhering to other requirements of CGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) norms. Understanding this state of affairs, Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DYPIPSR) has endeavored to mold young individuals by imparting quality pharmacy education and training to cater to the needs of the pharmacy profession and society at large.
Established by the visionary leader, Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil, DYPIPSR began its journey in 1994 by introducing the first pharmacy institute in PCMC area with a small intake of 40 students to B.Pharm course. The dynamic leadership of Hon. Dr. P. D. Patil has steered DYPIPSR to its present iconic status offering undergraduate program (B.Pharm) to both national and international students with an intake of 115 along with the post-graduate program (M.Pharm) in Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology & Quality Assurance Techniques, Pharm. D. program, and doctoral (Ph.D.) program. All the courses are AICTE approved and is recognized by Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). The Undergraduate program is re-accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi, for a period of 5 years and B.Pharm course is permanently affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. The institute is NACC accredited with ‘A’ Grade (CGPA 3.29). To its credit, the institute is also ISO 9001:2008, 14001:2004, TQV and green campus certified.

Housing an institutional research and development cell, DYPIPSR intends to promote and facilitate research activities amongst the faculty and students, foster an environment conducive for research, encourage faculty and students to participate in research projects to improve their technical skills and knowledge, and assist faculty in obtaining research grants from various funding bodies. The R&D cell in consultation with IQAC has framed various policies and guidelines for smooth implementation of research projects, joint collaborative projects, and consultancy activities carried out in the institute. DYPIPSR is actively engaged in joint collaborative research projects and consultancy activities in areas like pharmacological testing of herbal products and analytical method development and validation and Formulation development.
Imbibing Effective Teaching Learning Methodologies
DYPIPSR pays due attention to the teaching learning methodologies and evaluation techniques, which play a pivotal role in the process of dissemination of knowledge. The institute addresses the learning needs of all categories of students, slow and fast learners.
The student centric teaching learning process is the result of various learning strategies like ICT-enabled teaching and learning, interactive learning, collaborative learning, learning beyond syllabus, problem-based learning, and self directed learning. The institute constantly nurtures scientific and intellectual zeal amongst the learners by organizing seminars and workshops. DYPIPSR believes that in order to impart quality education, an equally qualified and competent team of experts is required. Hence, DYPIPSR’s multidisciplinary faculties are recruited from diverse backgrounds and immense experience. The faculty members had fetched research grants under various research promotional schemes from funding agencies like AICTE, UGC, DST, etc. and published more than 372 Research publications in reputed National & International journals, and presented 365 research papers. Some of the publications are accepted in international journals with the impact factor of 4.04. To their credit, they had also filed patents, authored 31 books, book chapters, and monographs. Their liaison with industry fraternity has resulted in 21 MOUs with reputed pharma industries, institutions, and research centre and sister institutes.
DYPIPSR ensures that its laboratories are well designed and equipped with sophisticated analytical instruments (FTIR, HPLC, HPTLC, Spray dryer, Extruder and Spheronizer etc) and have ultramodern facilities for imparting updated education and training in various subjects of pharmacy. A spacious industrial laboratory has also been set up with advanced pharmaceutical machineries (Tablet punching machine, Tablet coater, Fludized bed processor etc), thus providing a good industrial atmosphere and exposure to the students. The animal house is also maintained as per CPCSEA guidelines. Similarly, the in-house library houses more than 15,000 books, National and International journals, e-journals, membership of various libraries like Jaykar Library SPPU, British Library etc.

Setting its primary goal as working for the society, DYPIPSR intends to establish a teacher’s training institute and also to develop automated research laboratories by introducing advanced analytical instruments, image-technology-based computer added software, and nanotechnology-based tools and cell culture facility. The institute also plans on developing in-house novel biopharmaceuticals based on synthetic and natural bioactive compounds using novel drug delivery system in the national and international market and establish Drug Information Centre based on Pharm. D. course in association with Medical College. Moreover, DYPIPSR looks forward to establish fruitful collaborations with reputed pharmaceutical industries and universities around the globe for providing internship to PG students and provide job opportunities around a globe, while also facilitating student/Faculty exchange program.

Currently working Principal & Professor at Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Research, Pune (MS), Dr. Sohan S. Chitlang is a recipient of G. B. Singh Gold medal award & Husseni Daginwala Gold medal award for first merit at M.Pharm from Nagpur University. With around 19 years of Professional experience, Dr. Sohan S. Chitlang has published more than 82 research papers in National & International Journals of repute. He is Editorial board member for World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research, Indian Pharma Pulse review & reviewer for various journals like Journal of AOAC International, Analytical Chemistry letters, Acta Chromatographica, Chemical Society of Ethiopia, etc. He is approved PG and Ph.D. guide of University of Pune and has guided 54 PG students, 03 students has completed Ph.D. and 6 Students are pursuing their Ph.D under his guidance on different areas of research. . He has chaired scientific sessions at various national conferences and Presently he is Associate Secretary, Association of pharmacy Teachers of India (National), Executive council member, Association of Unaided Private Pharmacy Colleges, Maharashtra, Special Invitee Member, Pharma Research and Development Association, Ahmedabad and he also serving as Member, board of studies, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune.
