Taking the Engineering Education to Newer Heights

Malla Reddy Engineering College

From the traditional ‘chalk and talk’ method of teaching to actively engaging the student’s in the classroom, the teaching and learning process over the years has come a long way. One of such handful of the Institutes of the country which has been keeping a rhythm with the changing methodologies is Malla Reddy Engineering College (MREC), an autonomous institute which was established in the year 2002 by its visionary Founder Chairman- Mr. Ch. Malla Reddy. Currently also chairing the prestigious position of Member of Legislative Assembly from Medchal Constituency and Minister for Labour, Women & Child welfare and Skill development in the Telangana State Government, Mr. Ch. Malla Reddy had laid the foundation of MREC (A)  by offering only four branches of Engineering. However, gaining much appreciation from different stakeholders of engineering education, the institute presently conducts 7 UG Programmes and 5 PG Programmes in Engineering and 1 MBA Programme.

Embarked with the vision to impart quality and affordable technical education to the rural people, MREC (A) continuously has been putting considerable effort to stay ahead of time and adopt the most advanced and updated teaching and learning pedagogies, making sure the students stand out among the counterpart engineering graduates.

Dr. S. Sudhakara Reddy, Principal, MREC (A), says, “Adopting Bloom’s taxonomy had revolutionized the whole Teaching – Learning process at MREC(A). Added to this, for ensuring that the course curriculum is as per industry standard, we have embraced the A 2 prong strategy:

  1. included one mandatory industry representative in each of the Boards of Studies of various departments who helps in designing suitable curriculum
  2. established an active Industry Institute Interaction Cell (IIIC) that assists in drafting MoUs with prominent industries.”

The highlight of the institute’s faculty members lies in its heterogeneous nature. Dr. Sudhakara Reddy elaborates, “MREC’S faculty community is heterogeneous in respect to the age group, industry experience, academic experience, research experience, teaching-learning training and so on. This enables establishing strong coordination and cooperation among the faculty members that eventually impact the learning experience of the students inside and outside the classroom.” The institute has taken a unique initiative by scheduling a specialized training where a group of about 25 young faculty members with little or without any teaching experience are identified and are trained in the Pedagogy and TLP every year. Notably few of the faculty members are in the process of earning international certifications like IIEECP.

An Ideal Platform to Grow

As MREC (A) promises each of the students entering its campus to attain a holistic education experience, it has put ample effort in developing state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure that results into intensifying the students’ overall campus life. The campus of MREC (A) is encompassed with 24X7 connectivity to high-speed internet, all across the campus, a fully functional Union Bank of India branch, one ATM each of UBI and HDFC and so on. Besides this, the campus has been designed keeping in mind the academic and co-curricular needs of the students, given which, sports facilities and gym facilities, computer center and the digital library has been as well included. “Any Time Learning – ATL is hopefully a unique facility that helps the students access e-books and journals online 24X7 at their convenient time,” claims Dr. Sudhakara Reddy.

MREC (A) strongly follows the policy of Continuous Internal Evaluation as a part of which the students are needed to take one objective examination in each subject in every semester in both the first mid and second mid examinations. This Computer based test is conducted in the Online Examination lab. This kind of test helps the students to get acquainted with the Placement tests, exams like IELTS, TOEFL, GRE which are conducted in the CBT mode.

Dr. Sudhakara Reddy shares, “Research stands as an important part at our institute.  Through the dedicated Research, Development and Consultancy Cell, we thoroughly encourage our students to take up innovative Projects and are given an opportunity to exhibit them on the very auspicious occasion of every Engineer on September 15 i.e., Engineers’ day.” On the other hand, the faculty members are motivated to publish a research paper in reputed journals by providing incentives.

Dr. Sudhakara Reddy adds, “Parallel stress is put on educating the students about the framework of Entrepreneurship. An Entrepreneurship Development Cell has been placed for that purpose which has churned out a number of successful entrepreneurs including our alumnus Kasturi Santoshi Latha, the founder of Bigwig Technologies Pvt. Limited that today employs nearly 150 people.” The excellence and quality of MREC (A) have brought it a range of laurels. It has been counted one among the few engineering colleges across the country, shortlisted for Rs.4 Crore World Bank funding under TEQIP – II. The eligible UG programmes of Engineering have been accredited by National Board of Accreditation, few of them are accredited even twice. It’s worth mentioning here that few PG programmes in Engineering also got accredited by NBA and few more are in the process. The college is also accredited by National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) twice, in 2010 and in 2015 with ‘A’ grade. Finally University Grants Commission (UGC) conferred  the Autonomous status upon the college in the year 2014 for a period of 6 years.

Cap Gemini, Wipro, TCS, IBM, HCL, Think & Learn, Infosys, CTS, L & T Infotech etc to name a few are the  major recruiters of MREC (A). “The NAAC accreditation for the II Cycle is valid until June 2020. Hence, the institute aims at earning A++ grade during the III Cycle visit for NAAC accreditation along with focusing on initiating Research centers of excellence in each department of Engineering and Science,” concludes Dr. Sudhakara Reddy.
