Dr Mohan Wani appointed as Director of the National Centre for Cell Science


Dr. Mohan R Wani took charge as the Director of the Pune-based National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), a research institute of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology on June 15th. Dr. Wani completed his post-graduation in Veterinary Surgery from Nagpur Veterinary College and his Ph.D. in Human Medicine from St. George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, England.

In NCCS, Dr. Wani has made a significant research contribution to understanding the regulation of cellular and molecular pathophysiology of important skeletal and autoimmune diseases, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. His group has also contributed to the field of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine, said the official release.

Dr. Wani has mentored several Ph.D., medical & veterinary students, and postdoctoral fellows. He is a recipient of several awards including the Commonwealth Fellowship, B. M. Birla Science Prize, National Bioscience Award, Tata Innovation Fellowship, etc.

“NCCS has been carrying out cutting-edge research in various domains such as Cell & Cancer Biology, Infectious Diseases & Immunology, Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine, Structural Biology, and Bioinformatics. NCCS also provides important services to the scientific community across India through its national cell and microbial repositories. NCCS will continue to address the most relevant research questions pertaining to human health and diseases by further strengthening the basic and translational research through a multidisciplinary approach, along with national and international collaborations,” said Wani in his statement to the media.
