Leaders are made, not born overnight! They are made by years of hard work, passion, grit and determination to not just succeed in their own lives but to etch an impact in other’s lives too. One such passionate and inspirational leader is Dr. Nuzhat Parveen Khan, Professor and Dean, School of Law, Bennett University. Being an academician, she has more than thirty years of academic experience.
She is also the former Dean Faculty of Law Jamia Millia Islamia of the Central University. Professor Khan has worked on a project for the Ministry of Women and Child Development, titled, “A Study of Discriminative and Derogatory Practices against Women by Khap Panchayats, Kangaroo Courts and Shalishi Adalats in India: An Empirical Study in the States of Haryana, Rajasthan, Western U.P. and West Bengal.” The project report was also presented before the Parliament of India in 2014 and was appreciated by one and all. She was awarded Best Academician of the Year 2021 by the Centre for Education Growth and Research 8th Higher Education Summit Cum 16th Rashtriya Shiksha Gauray Puraskar Ceremony 2021 on 30 December 2021.
Behind such a rich and vast track record of Dr. Khan lies her hard work and dedication. She started her career in teaching from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, joined Faculty of Law in 1992. Dr. Nuzhat holds various academic and administrative posts viz. Dean, Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi,(2016-201); Chairperson, (POSH),Internal Complaints Committee, Jamia Millia Islamia, Chairperson (Law), National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, MHRD; New Delhi, Provost, Hall of Girls’ Residence, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi to name the few.
The NCW sponsored Standardized Module For Legal Awareness Programme About Women Related Law, prepared with the aim to empower women and girls with the knowledge of laws related to women, legal rights and duties, to enable them, to share power equally, gain full access to the means of development, and to inspire a whole generation of women to work together towards achieving equality and justice. She has also undertaken Research Projects on Legal Awareness Programme about Women Related Laws in different parts of Delhi for community awareness and sensitivity sponsored by National Commission for Women. She is also among famous women leaders in education.
An Experienced Leader
Prof. Khan has delivered lectures extensively as resource person/keynote speaker in various National and International Seminars, Conferences and Faculty Development Programs. She was invited as Keynote Speaker at the 7th Academic International Conference on Interdisciplinary Legal Studies (AICILS 2017 Boston) at Harvard University, USA in 2017. She even presented a paper entitled Recognition of Food Right in the Food Security Laws in India at the event. She has been frequently invited as a resource person on Lok Sabha TV, Zee T.V. and Doordarshan Channels on Gender Discourses and Legal Point shows.
Dr. Khan is connected to the education sector from the past thirty one years eight years, on that she shares, “The freedom to express one’s views in a logical way to influence the young minds for a better cause while constantly learning, earning a livelihood, and getting inspired in the process are potent factors and the greatest incentives to remain connected with the education sector.” She has authored dozens of books on conflicting and contemporary legal issues. To name the few, Women and Child Related Laws (LexisNexis India), Women and the Law, Child and the Law (LexisNexis India), Comparative Constitutional Law (Satyam Law International), Legal Control of Air Pollution: Problems and Perspectives (Metropolitan Book Company Pvt. Ltd.), Socio-Economic Offense (Central Law Publications) etc. Prof. Khan has contributed and presented modules on Jurimetrics for the UGC e-Pathshala Project at graduate and post graduate level. She has also authored study materials for various universities and colleges across the nation. She recently featured in the prestigious list of 100 Inspiring Muslim Women from Uttar Pradesh, India under the theme Rising Beyond the Ceiling published by Inspiring Indian Muslim Women for her contribution in the field of academics.
