Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Annapurna Devi, informed the Rajya Sabha that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) maintains equality between the terms ‘India’ and ‘Bharat.’ This clarification followed queries from Rajya Sabha members Sandosh Kumar P and Elamaram Kareem, who sought information on whether the government had received any NCERT panel recommendations to replace ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in textbooks and the rationale behind such a shift. Annapurna Devi, in her written response, asserted that NCERT aligns with the constitutional recognition of both ‘India’ and ‘Bharat’ as official names, as articulated in Article 1 of the Constitution of India. The response emphasized that NCERT adheres to the constitutional spirit, treating both terms interchangeably without discrimination.
