Started out as a modest medical school with 23 students in 1905 and founded by a determined group of businesspersons led by Tan Jiak Kim.In-order to serve the needs of the local community, the National University of Singapore aspires to be a vital community of academics, researchers, staff, students and alumni working together in a spirit of innovation and enterprise for a better world. CONDUCTING IMPACTFUL RESEARCH

The University’s quality multidisciplinary research focuses on creating positive economic and societal impact. At NUS, we bring together researchers from diverse fields and push boundaries to achieve research excellence in an integrated way. We have built eight integrative research clusters: health innovation; aging; energy, environmental and urban sustainability; risk management and resilience of financial systems; smart nation; materials research; maritime and offshore research; and Asian studies.

As the world stands on the cusp of the 4th Industrial Revolution, where digital and autonomous technologies redefine the way we live and work, NUS’ research strategy dovetails with Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative. NUS’ Smart Nation Research Cluster gathers research talents from diverse fields such as engineering, medicine, computing, physical and social sciences to create innovative solutions. There are more than a dozen interdisciplinary strategic research entities housed in the state-of-the-art innovation4.0 (i4.0) building to strengthen the University’s strategic capabilities towards digital transformation. I4.0 is also home to the NUS Graduate Research Innovation Program that taps graduate students, a post-doctoral fellow, and research staff to establish up to 250 deep-tech start-ups over five years.

INSPIRING THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT

NUS Enterprise, the University’s entrepreneurial arm, has been actively promoting entrepreneurship and cultivating talents through education, industry partnerships, and holistic start-up support. The popular NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) program, which combines overseas start-up internships with entrepreneurial coursework at leading partner universities, equips the students with valuable hands-on experience in dynamic innovation hubs.

Since 2002, more than 2,800 students have benefitted from an entrepreneurial education and carved out successful ventures in the business world. In 2018 and 2019, the NOC program expanded to include new locations in Southeast Asia, Toronto, and Shenzhen.

CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY

NUS provides many avenues for the students to pursue their passion in sports, arts and culture, as well as social and environmental causes.The NUS community is committed to making a difference to society through selfless acts of kindness. Our students regularly engage in social projects, fundraising, health screening sessions,voluntary tuition and mentorship, facility building for the underprivileged and other community programs to better the lives of others.
