School Reopening in India: Karnataka to decide today, Maharashtra reopens, Gujarat defers


Schools in India have started to reopen in phased manner following the Unlock 5.0 Guidelines that permitted the same. While a few states have already reopened, many are still to take a decision. With the cases continuing to surge, a decision to selectively reopen schools in parts of Maharashtra was taken. As for Gujarat and Rajasthan which had decided to reopen from November 23 – the decision was deferred. Karnataka, on the other hand is likely to decide today – Check state wise updates on school reopening in India.

Starting with Maharashtra, following the State Government’s directives to local bodies, city administrations have issued orders to allow partial reopening of schools. Schools in Mumbai, Pune City, Nashik, Aurangabad City, Pimpri Chinchwad, etc. would remain closed with decision on reopening to be taken at a later date. As for schools in Pune Rural and Aurangabad Rural, they would reopen under strict SOPs from today – November 23, 2020.

On the other hand, Gujarat, which had also earlier announced their decision to reopen from November 23 have deferred the same and extended the closure of schools and colleges in the state till November 30. Rajasthan has also decided to keep the schools closed till November 30.

Karnataka Government has not yet announced its decision on reopening schools. While colleges in Karnataka have reopened, the state government is expected to announce its decision on dates for reopening schools today – November 23.

In another instance, Haryana Government has decided to close all schools in the state after they were reopened earlier this month following an increase in infection among kids. As for West Bengal, Tamil Nadu – no decision on date has been taken as yet. Odisha had announced its decision to keep schools closed till December 31 in the state.
