Data from the Higher Education Department reveals a significant staffing crisis across Jammu and Kashmir’s academic landscape. Currently, nearly 40% of sanctioned teaching positions remain unfilled, leaving approximately a dozen universities struggling to maintain standard operations.
Out of the 3,300+ faculty roles authorized across nine public and two central universities, only about 1,900 positions are currently occupied. This leaves a staggering gap of over 1,400 vacancies across the region.
Key Institutional Breakdowns:
- University of Jammu: Facing a 43% vacancy rate, with only 252 teachers active out of 442 sanctioned roles.
- University of Kashmir: Operating with a 35% shortfall, employing 373 teachers against a requirement of 570.
This widespread deficit has forced several of the state’s premier institutions to operate significantly below their intended capacity, raising concerns about the long-term impact on academic quality and student outcomes.
