In order to expand their presence in the thriving online education sector, Coursera, a US-based company, has employed generative artificial intelligence to translate 4000 courses into Hindi. This initiative aims to provide the Hindi-speaking audience with access to renowned courses like Generative AI for Everyone from DeepLearning.AI, the Science of Well-Being from Yale University, Programming for Everybody from the University of Michigan, and What is Data Science? from IBM, among others.
Establishing its roots in India in 2012, Coursera offers online courses from some of the world’s leading universities. Additionally, more than 40 courses from prominent Indian institutions, including BITS Pilani, IIM Ahmedabad, and the Indian School of Business (ISB), will be translated into 18 languages, such as French, Spanish, German, and Thai, according to Coursera.
In terms of course enrollments, India has surpassed the United States, a phenomenon attributed to the pandemic by Coursera CEO Jeff Maggioncalda. He noted that during the pandemic, India witnessed significant growth with 18.6 million new learner registrations, surpassing the US’s 17.1 million. This surge is attributed to the Indian population’s eagerness to upskill for enhanced job prospects, a trend that gained momentum during the lockdown phase when remote work became more prevalent.
