Igniting Holistic Happiness in Early Childhood
In today’s fast-paced world, education is evolving beyond textbooks and exams. Parents and educators alike are seeking environments that nurture not just intelligence but also empathy, health, resilience, and creativity. The early years when a child’s brain, body, and emotional landscape are developing rapidly form the foundation for lifelong well-being.
In Chennai, one such institution has been quietly redefining the meaning of early education. iSpark Holistic Happiness Studio, founded by Ms. Manisha Kanoria Lohia, stands as a model of how love, learning, and lifestyle can harmoniously come together. More than a preschool, iSpark is a philosophy in motion, a space that celebrates childhood in all its vibrancy while nurturing physical health, emotional balance, and a lifelong curiosity for learning.
A Vision Born from Purpose
The name “iSpark” carries both emotion and intention. Conceived by revered Mahatria Ra, “Spark” symbolizes fire, energy, and radiance which are the very qualities children embody. The small “i” stands for “igniting,” but also reflects the individuality of every child. Together, iSpark means “Igniting Sparks of Happiness.” It’s an idea that connects traditional wisdom with modern relevance much like the studio itself.
A seasoned Montessori educator trained at the London Montessori Centre, Manisha has spent over three decades understanding and guiding young minds. Deeply inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s philosophy – “Developing the muscles of iron, nerves of steel, and a mind like a thunderbolt”. She envisioned a learning environment that nourishes not only knowledge but also strength, self-discipline, and moral clarity.
Her journey was personal as well as professional. Having witnessed her own child’s transformation through healthy habits and fitness, she realized that early education must be about more than academic readiness; it must cultivate holistic happiness.
Nurturing Body, Mind, and Soul
At iSpark, learning unfolds through experience, movement, and joy. Every corner of the environment is designed to promote comfort, independence, and inspiration, consisting of bright, colorful spaces where children explore freely, guided by caring Montessori educators.
The studio follows Dr. Maria Montessori’s principles of hands-on, child-led discovery, but expands them into a truly holistic ecosystem. Programs are designed to develop eight essential dimensions of growth, inspiration, creativity, empathy, curiosity, adaptability, mindfulness, physical health, and lifelong learning.
Children aged one to six learn in mixed-age groups, discovering the world at their own pace through sensory materials, stories, music, and fitness activities. As Manisha explains, “Our goal is not competition but confidence – helping children become aware of their own potential and proud of who they are.”
Beyond Schooling
iSpark’s strength lies in its thoughtfully designed programs that integrate care, learning, fitness, and mindfulness:
For children aged one to six, the Montessori House program adheres to genuine Montessori principles designed to enhance concentration, foster independence, and develop social skills. The following program, known as the Second Environment, goes beyond a simple daycare by offering structured play, quiet reading, and creative exploration, while ensuring children’s emotional comfort and safety throughout the day. The RAFT, Ready Always For Tomorrow, is a distinctive after-school initiative blending yoga, dance, fitness, and reflective activities aimed at strengthening both body and mind. Lastly, the Janani program is an innovative wellness offering for expectant mothers, featuring the “Womb Room,” a tranquil space that replicates the calming environment of a mother’s womb, providing meditation, rest, and emotional reconnection.
Beyond academics, iSpark celebrates life through camps, cultural events, and family gatherings such as Grandparents’ Day and Outdoor Visits experiences that deepen the bond between children, parents, and community.
Health, Nutrition, and Movement at the Core
What makes iSpark truly unique is its focus on health and nutrition from the very beginning. The studio houses imported, child-safe gym equipment from South Carolina’s Kids Fit, designed for both active and overweight children.
Nutrition is guided by Mrs. Mala Chettri, Head Nutritionist and member of the Indian Dietetic Association, who personally plans every child’s meal. The food is prepared in-house, focusing on balanced, wholesome ingredients while accommodating individual needs and allergies.
Parents are also involved in the process, receiving advice on continuing healthy habits at home. “Children must be given experiences, not excess,” says Manisha. “A healthy meal, a walk in the sun, or reading a book together can bring them far more joy than any gadget.”
Guides, Not Teachers
In the Montessori world, educators are known as guides, individuals who direct rather than instruct. iSpark follows this principle passionately. Each guide undergoes rigorous training, learning to observe, support, and nurture rather than command.
Manisha’s hiring philosophy prioritizes attitude and empathy over credentials alone. “We can train for skill, but we cannot teach sensitivity,” she says. Many of her team members have been with iSpark since its inception in 2016, reflecting the environment’s warmth and sense of purpose.
Stories that Inspire
The impact of iSpark can be seen in the smiles and confidence of its children. One such story is that of Keshav, a highly energetic child once labelled as inattentive in conventional settings. Through iSpark’s calm, movement-based learning, he flourished, discovering focus and creativity, and today excelling in music.
Another child, Amrita, found acceptance and happiness at iSpark after facing rejection elsewhere due to learning challenges. “Here, no child is compared or boxed into labels. We let them unfold naturally,” says Manisha.
The Road Ahead
Manisha’s dream for iSpark extends well beyond Chennai. While she plans to open branches across India and abroad, she is determined to retain quality over quantity. “Franchise models can dilute the soul of what we do. Each iSpark must stay authentic to its roots,” she insists.
Her global vision was reinforced during her 2018 visit to Harvard University, where education experts expressed interest in bringing the iSpark model to the U.S. for addressing early childhood obesity and emotional health.
Through her books – Aspire to Inspire, And It Rained Blessings, and Umbilically Yours she continues to share her insights on motherhood, mindfulness, and positive parenting, inspiring adults to rediscover joy through children’s eyes.
All in all, at iSpark, education is an act of love. Every element from safety and nutrition to mindfulness and art is designed to create happy, self-aware, and resilient individuals. “We don’t just prepare children for school,” says Manisha, “we prepare them for life.”
