To provide our readers with a genuine, on-the-ground perspective of what the Symbiosis Centre for Media & Communication (SCMC) truly represents, we had an in-depth conversation with the institute’s Director, Dr. Sreeram Gopalkrishnan.

To begin our detailed dialogue, we asked Dr. Gopalkrishnan what sets SCMC apart from other media institutions. He explained, “SCMC is a specialized media college that includes communication as one of its core competence.” He further added, “In the last decade, SCMC has consistently earned the distinction of being India’s top-ranked undergraduate media college.”

Currently, SCMC offers two flagship programs: a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication with specializations like film production, multimedia journalism, and film studies; and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Media Management, which emphasizes brand communication alongside minors in corporate communications, public relations, digital marketing, advertising, and media entrepreneurship. The foundation of SCMC’s expertise lies in content creation and content management.

On the technology front, SCMC was among the pioneers in integrating ICT tools and design thinking approaches at the media college level. The institute has incorporated a range of advanced artificial intelligence tools such as Runway, Pick Arts, AI into its learning environment. However, as Dr. Gopalkrishnan emphasized, “Our focus extends beyond merely using AI software, we prioritize teaching AI software management and prompt engineering to empower students to harness AI technologies proficiently and holistically within their workflows.”

Bridging Classroom Learning with Real-World Media Experience

Placing equal importance on both in-house training and extensive industry exposure SCMC is renowned for its robust industry-academia collaborations, boasting an impressive near 100% placement rate, with salary packages in a median of ₹4.6 lakhs to a highs of ₹8-9 lakhs annually. 

A distinctive feature of the SCMC curriculum is its requirement for students to complete three internships, each lasting two months, providing a solid six months of practical industry experience before graduation.

Leveraging strong ties with the top players of the media industry, SCMC partners with over 200 organizations for student placements. Even during the challenges of the pandemic, the institute maintained strong placement and an increasing trend in admissions. With a focus on multimedia journalism over traditional forms, SCMC operates its own digital news portal, Chronicle Express, fully managed by students. This hands-on experience extends to managing a dedicated news app, where students develop skills in reporting, editing, design, content management, coding, and user interface management.

SCMC’s alumni network includes award-winning professionals across film and digital media sectors. Graduates are highly sought after, securing roles in advertising, public relations, event management, and digital journalism firms.

Commitment to Rigorous, Applied Research

As the final question in our interview with Dr. Sreeram Gopalkrishnan, we asked about the importance of research at SCMC and how students are encouraged to engage in applied, practical research rather than just theory.

Dr. Gopalkrishnan emphasized that both theory and application are critical components of media education. He pointed out that many industry professionals develop strategic proposals or business plans while academic focus on foundation.  SCMC ensures its students maintain a strong balance between academic theory and practical skills. The institute provides continuous mentorship and guidance, integrating project-based learning throughout the four-year program. These projects blend high-level research with professional industry skills, preparing students to become well-rounded, capable professionals ready to meet the challenges of the media world.
