Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade always envisioned bringing world-class medical education and healthcare to North Karnataka, a region historically underserved by quality medical institutions. The foundation stone of SDM College of Medical Sciences was laid by then Chief Minister S.M. Krishna on March 3, 2002, and within a remarkable 18 months, the institution opened its doors in September 2004, welcoming its first batch of 100 MBBS students.
Today, sprawled across 70-acre of serene, pollution-free surroundings in Sattur, Dharwad, the college stands as the crown jewel of SDME Society’s medical education mission. Modern architecture seamlessly blends with gardens, creating an ideal sanctuary for rigorous medical education and holistic student development. The campus houses the college and attached multispecialty hospital with 1,250 beds combined, staff quarters, and state-ofthe-art diagnostic facilities.

When Medicine Meets Compassion
Dr. Niranjan Kumar, the Medical Director and Vice Chancellor, shared a touching story illustrating how the spiritual essence of Dharmasthala resonates in Dharwad despite the 400 km distance. On the occasion of the hospital’s first childbirth, while en route to see the newborn, Dr. Niranjan Kumar asked the Nursing Superintendent if the baby could be named “Manjunatha” after the sacred deity associated with the institution. The superintendent smiled and gently informed him it was a baby girl, and that the family followed a different faith. Accepting this warmly, they ensured the mother and child received the best care, and when Dr. Niranjan Kumar out of curiosity asked the mother what she had named her daughter, 
she smiled and said “Manjusha.” This first childbirth was provided free of cost, symbolizing the hospital’s commitment to compassionate and inclusive care. Reflecting on this, the Vice Chancellor noted how the people of Hubli and Dharwad regard the hospital with reverence, greeting it with Namaskara whenever they pass by, as though it were a temple itself
