As SDM University was consolidating its teaching mission, Dr. Heggade established the SDM Research Institute for Biomedical Sciences. The institute traces its roots to 2016, when the SDM Life Science Research Center was founded to conduct research on human stem cells for cartilage and bone regeneration. By 2017, this evolved into the SDM Biomedical Research Center, and finally became SDMRIBS in 2019.
