While Vidyadana began with Manjayya and Ratnavarma Heggade, it found its fullest expression under one man’s leadership for the past 57 years. From 1 college to 56 institutions, from local impact to state-wide transformation, one vision, one mission, one relentless commitment.

At the age 20, he inherited centuries of tradition. What he built is nothing short of an educational revolution rooted in timeless values. Meet the architect of modern Vidyadana, the man who proved that education can be both excellent and accessible, both spiritual and scientific, Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade.

Early life

Born on November 25, 1948, in Bantwal to Dharmadhikari Ratnavarma Heggade and Rathnamma Heggade, the young Veerendra Heggade grew up surrounded by the spiritual and humanitarian traditions of Dharmasthala. He was the eldest of five siblings – Harshendra Kumar, Surendra Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, and sister Padmalatha.

From childhood, Veerendra was immersed in the values and teachings of Dharmasthala. His father’s vision of expanding education to the rural poor, his grandfather Manjayya’s sacrifice for the destitute, and the 600-year legacy of the Pergade dynasty, all shaped the young boy’s understanding of duty and dharma.

But Ratnavarma Heggade, a visionary himself, knew that raw lineage alone was not enough. His eldest son needed to understand what it meant to be poor, to struggle, to be humble. So, before preparing him for the responsibility of Dharmadhikari, Ratnavarma made an unconventional choice: he sent his own son to study at Siddhavana Gurukula, the free hostel meant for economically disadvantaged children. There, amid students from humble backgrounds, Veerendra Heggade learned simplicity, humility, and empathy, lessons that money could never teach and that traditions could never impart.

Taking over as Dharmadhikari

When Veerendra Heggade turned twenty, his transition towards gradual adulthood was abruptly cut short. On October 24, 1968, while still preparing for his graduation from Bangalore University, his father Ratnavarma Heggade passed away unexpectedly. The responsibility that had been carefully nurtured within him now became urgent and real.

At the tender age of 20, Veerendra Heggade became the 21st Dharmadhikari in an unbroken lineage stretching 600 years into the past. The mantle that had passed from father to son, from grandfather to grandson, through centuries, now fell on his young shoulders. By ancient law and tradition, he was the guardian of a sacred temple, a sprawling township, thousands of devotees, and an entire educational mission still in its infancy.

Taking over as Dharmadhikari It would have been easy for a 20 year old to feel overwhelmed, to retreat into ritual and tradition, to simply maintain what his ancestors had built. But Veerendra Heggade had been shaped differently. His time in Siddhavana Gurukula, his father’s vision of SDM College in remote Ujire, his grandfather’s commitment to education as a weapon against poverty, all of it resonated within him.
