Most technical institutes across the country stand in urgent need of leadership that is both motivated and deeply committed to change. They need modernized resources, decentralized administration, and faculty who are actively exposed to global, multidisciplinary research and technology-driven projects. Curricula must evolve to become truly outcome-based across every branch of study. Meeting these demands calls for a rare kind of leadership, one rooted in strategic vision and disciplined execution.

Dr. Rajesh Prasad, Principal of Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Engineering, Pune, stands out as exactly this kind of leader. His focus has consistently been on accelerating the institute’s growth, while operating across a range of roles all at once. It is this multifaceted approach that has earned him a place among India’s most capable principals in higher education, as he continues his pursuit of shaping tomorrow’s engineers into well-rounded leaders in today’s super-competitive world.

When Curiosity Met Purpose

Before his venture into a teaching career, Dr. Rajesh Shardanand Prasad’s journey began as a computer engineering student. Growing up, he was fortunate to have teachers who encouraged questioning, experimentation, and lifelong learning. As he progressed through his academic and professional life, he found himself drawn to educators and mentors who saw teaching not just as a profession, but as an act of nation-building. Their passion left a lasting imprint on him, inspiring him to pursue higher education not just as a career, but as a mission.

This conviction, paired with his passion for engineering, eventually led Dr. Prasad to earn his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded.

From Lecturer to Leader

Dr. Prasad’s professional journey spans nearly three decades across reputed engineering institutions in India. Beginning as a lecturer, he gradually progressed through a range of responsibilities, Head of Department, Dean, Associate Dean, Director, and eventually Principal. When he assumed the role of Principal at Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Engineering, Pune, he stepped into a rich legacy of excellence built over decades.

Dr. Prasad’s role as Principal extends far beyond administration. He credits much of the institute’s momentum to the dynamic leadership of Dr. Vishwajeet Kadam, Pro Vice Chancellor, and the academic guidance of Dr. Vivek Saoji, Vice Chancellor.

A typical day for Dr. Prasad begins with reviewing academic operations, student and faculty matters, and strategic initiatives. A significant part of his schedule is devoted to meetings with department heads, faculty members, industry representatives, researchers, and students. He invests considerable time in monitoring quality assurance processes, accreditation activities, admissions strategies, research initiatives, and industry collaborations. Equally central to his day is engaging directly with students, while understanding their aspirations, challenges, and ideas, which in turn helps shape and refine institutional policy.

To bridge the persistent gap between academic learning and industry readiness, Dr. Prasad has driven the adoption of several initiatives at Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering, Pune. The institute has implemented NEP 2020-compliant, outcome-based curricula, with project-based learning and mandatory internships. This has been complemented by the introduction of skill-based and value-added courses, alongside strong industry collaborations forged through active MoUs. The college has also established Centres of Excellence in emerging technologies, strengthened its MSME-supported incubation ecosystem, and encouraged multidisciplinary student innovation teams. Students are encouraged to identify societal challenges and design practical solutions, with exposure to hackathons, industrial visits, expert sessions, and entrepreneurial mentoring ensuring that learning extends well beyond the classroom into real-world application.

The Road Ahead

Asked about his vision for the institute’s future, Dr. Prasad’s answer reflects the same forward-looking conviction that has defined his tenure so far. “Looking ahead, I envision Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering evolving into a globally recognized center for Technical Education,” he says.

For Dr. Prasad, this vision extends beyond technology alone. He speaks equally of industry-led education and deeper international collaborations as pillars of the institute’s next chapter, alongside a firm commitment to socially conscious engineering solutions. “The goal,” he adds, “is to build an institution where technical excellence and social responsibility grow together, not apart.”

Student Who Never Stopped Learning

Beyond the boardrooms and academic corridors, Dr. Prasad remains, at heart, a lifelong student of technology and ideas. He continues to be deeply fascinated by emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Explainable AI, Natural Language Processing, and cybersecurity.

Dr. Prasad is also an avid reader with particular interest in leadership and educational transformation, drawing inspiration from the biographies of visionary leaders past and present. Research writing and mentoring young scholars remain among the activities he cherishes most, a commitment reflected in the 7 Ph.D. scholars he has guided to completion so far. Alongside this, he equally treasures quality time with family, informal conversations with students, and involvement in community-oriented initiatives that keep him grounded and offer perspective.

“Curiosity is the fuel of lifelong learning,” he reflects, “and one should never stop being a student.” It’s a philosophy that runs through everything he does, one he distills into a personal mantra – “Prioritize purpose, empower people, and pursue excellence with balance.”
