 Ganga Institute of Health Sciences in a Nutshell

Founded by Dr. J.G. Shanmuganathan and his wife, Mrs. Kanakavalli Shanmuganathan, the institute was established with the aim of empowering women through education, operating on the belief that educating a girl can elevate the entire family’s standard of living. Today, Ganga Institute offers 13 courses in nursing and paramedical sciences, serving 850 students within a robust framework of clinical practice, academic rigor, research, and social responsibility.

Ganga Institute began offering B.Sc. Nursing in 2009 with an initial intake of fifty students, followed by the launch of the basic B.Sc. program in 2010. In a significant milestone this year 2024, the institute introduced the M.Sc. Nursing program with an intake of 10 students. As a co-educational institution, Ganga Institute benefits from its parent hospital, which has 850 beds, providing students with diverse clinical experiences that are integral to fulfilling the institution’s vision and mission.

Ganga Institute is affiliated with Dr. M.G.R. Medical University in Chennai and is recognized by the Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi, as well as the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, Chennai. Upon graduation, students are registered as licensed nurses and midwives by these autonomous statutory bodies. Upholding the motto “ASPIRE TO EXCEL,” the institute ensures that every individual is equipped to excel in their chosen field. Additionally, Ganga Institute has maintained ISO recognition since its inception, with annual audits reviewing its standards, policies, and procedures to ensure continual improvement.

Aligned with the curriculum designed by the affiliated University and National Council Governing Authority it also follows the INSTITUTION DESIGNED CURRICULUM and implements for all the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Nursing and Allied Health Sciences courses every year.

SCENARIO-BASED LEARNING (SBL) which is an immersive training environment has been provided by this institution in which the learners face actual obstacles and receive realistic feedback as they progress with Simulators. Enabling the learners to make real-life decisions in formal and informal settings with ease.

Expertise learning sessions are delivered through the medical professionals from the parent hospital on a regular basis. The Allied Sciences Courses are coordinated by the doctors that makes more enriched learning for the students.

An innovative spectrum of Teaching Learning methods are given to the students under the strategy called “YUKTHI PYRAMID” to enhance the learning which is a Unique Distinctiveness of the Ganga Institute of Health Sciences. Mr. James II yr B Sc MLT has secured 100/100 in the University Examination The institute also conducts a comprehensive five-day induction program for new students, featuring motivational speakers, psychologists, and faculty members to help them transition into their four-year course.

As Education is a journey that extends beyond curriculum , Ganga Institute integrates a variety of student activities and ceremonies as essential components of the academic experience. A highlight is the Florence Nightingale oath-taking ceremony, also known as the lamp lighting ceremony, where nursing students pledge their commitment before embarking on their professional careers. The institute also conducts a comprehensive five-day induction program for new students, featuring motivational speakers, psychologists, and faculty members to help them transition into their four-year course.

Ganga Institute celebrates and cherishes Independence Day and Republic Day with grand events, fostering a sense of oneness and patriotism. Students are actively involved in various clubs and committees, such as research, cultural, and library committees, contributing to a well-rounded educational experience.

Every two years, the institute holds a graduation ceremony to honor outstanding students across all courses, including the top clinical performers. Scholarships and sponsorships are also awarded during this event.

Additionally, GIHS has started a Green Campus initiative, focusing on environmental sustainability practices such as biogas plants, food waste management, and water recycling. And the institute houses a robust pest control system to ensure a safe environment for students in the hostel.

Mrs. Rama Rajeskeran – Trustee, (GIHS), highlighted the institute’s commitment to faculty welfare. She emphasized, “We place great importance on the well-being of the faculty members. Those who have served for over 10 years are recognized by the management. Fostering the culture to hold doctoral credentials among all the pedagogues and encourage them with meaningful contribution for their professional upliftment. This soundful academic band are well supported by the management and express the pride that the institution is serving as a BLS training center recognised by the Tamil nadu Government in which about 500 Nurses are trained and certified. Infusing the spirit of professional upliftment and continuous progress by encouraging presentations and participation at various knowledge forums. Many faculty members have the privilege of being Evaluators at university level and Inspectors in various statutory bodies.

Building a Legacy: Strong Alumni Network

GIHS takes pride in its strong alumni network, managed by a student-led body comprising a secretary, president, and treasurer. The institute hosts an annual alumni meet and publishes an alumni newsletter to keep the community connected. GIHS has consistently achieved remarkable academic success, with consecutive 100% pass rates in the final years of various courses over the past eight years. Their alumni Mr. ARUN RAJ from the 2015-2019 batch received the emerging PA Award at IAPA Conference held at Gujarat, along with another alumni Ms. Rappiya PBBSc from the Nursing 2017 – 2019 batch received BEST CLINICAL NURSE AWARD on International Nurses Day 2023 from Dr. Ani Grace, Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council Registrar.

Research Hub – Defining discoveries

As an epitome of excellence in the field of research, Faculty and students are constantly publishing articles in high indexed journals and propelling book authorship. The Institute has received grants from ICMR – DHR for national conferences and also proposed 2 crore grants for a project from the same national funding agency. The PG students have received a patent for her cookery project from an International academic agency. As an added feather to the crown , DR. Esther Rakel , Dean cum Principal and Mrs. Priscilla , Asso. Prof  has received a “INTERNATIONAL BEST NURSE RESEARCHER AWARD” BY ISSN at IIRA Conference.
