J D Birla Institute in a Nutshell
Established in 1962 initially as an educational institution exclusively for girls, with a focus on providing scientific education to young women from conservative backgrounds, JDBI boasts a wealth of experience spanning over 50 years in the field of education. Notably, in 2010, JDBI received the prestigious “A” grading from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), acknowledging its commitment to excellence. Affiliated with Jadavpur University, a globally renowned Center of Excellence since 1963, the institute has evolved over time to meet the evolving needs of society.
Responding to societal demands and changing times, JDBI expanded its offerings. In 1997, a Department of Commerce was established, followed by the inauguration of a new campus in 2002 to accommodate the co-educational Department of Management. Additionally, in 2009, JDBI introduced four new undergraduate B.Sc courses (Food Science & Nutrition Management; Textile Science, Clothing & Fashion Studies; Interior Designing; and Human Development) and two new postgraduate M.Sc courses (Food & Nutrition and Textiles & Clothing). In 2013, the institute introduced the M.Com program while discontinuing the Home Science Programme.
The Institute has responded to the evolving educational landscape by fostering innovation and providing students with a learning environment that meets current industry standards. Robust IT infrastructure has been ensured, with both campuses equipped with WiFi featuring high-speed internet connectivity to support a seamless learning experience. Each of the 25 classrooms is furnished with digital panels/projectors and whiteboards. Additionally, the Institute boasts three computer laboratories and one CAD studio, all well-equipped to facilitate practical learning experiences. Furthermore, the 14 other laboratories are outfitted with specialized facilities. The automated Learning Resource Centers (LRCs) at both campuses boast impressive collections of books, journals, magazines, and other e-resources, while also providing access to online learning platforms, e-books, and digital libraries.
Additionally, academic support in the form of freeships, scholarships, and industry partnerships is provided to students, offering real-world exposure through field visits, internships, and placement opportunities.

The J D Birla Institute is dedicated to raising the standard of education by implementing a number of proactive strategies and creative projects. The curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect current industry trends and technology improvements, as an example of this dedication. Beginning with the academic year 2023–2024, the institution is pursuing this goal by introducing interdisciplinary courses and opportunities for experiential learning that align with the goals of the National Education Policy 2020.
