Bridging Tradition, Education, and Innovation
Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya (MSSV) was established as an initiative led by Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha, the largest NGO in Northeast India. To realize its long-standing vision of a university, the Sangha authorized the Srimanta Sankaradeva Education and Socio-Economic Development Trust, Nagaon to sponsor the institution’s establishment.
Formally founded on June 10, 2014, MSSV operates as a people’s university, serving the educational needs of Assam and beyond. Situated at Nagaon, a place deeply associated with the saint’s legacy, the university aims to foster social regeneration through value-oriented education. MSSV integrates technical excellence with spiritual and moral values, ensuring a holistic learning experience. A distinctive aspect of its pedagogy is the emphasis on meditation, with every class beginning with five minutes of mindfulness practice. Additionally, the university organizes spiritual deliberations, lectures, and discussions to instil ethical and moral grounding in students.
MSSV offers a diverse range of programs across social sciences, humanities, and sciences, including specialized courses in Cancer Biology, Digital Forensics and Cyber Security, and IT (Machine Learning & Big Data Analytics). The university has also established collaborations with the North Eastern Space Applications Centre, Department of Space Govt. of India expanding opportunities in space Technology and physics research.
Leadership and Research Excellence
Led by esteemed educationists and scholars, MSSV is guided by Chancellor Sjt. Bhabendra Nath Deka and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mridul Hazarika, collectively steer the university toward value-oriented education with a humanistic perspective across diverse disciplines. To gain deeper insight into MSSV’s strengths, we had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Hazarika, who highlighted the university’s strong emphasis on research and development.
Addressing the significance of research at MSSV, Prof. Hazarika stated, “Research is a priority at MSSV. Though we are a young university, we are actively strengthening our research infrastructure. We collaborate with industries and institutions, particularly in Biotechnology, Cancer Biology, Computational Biology, and Bioinformatics.”
He further elaborated on MSSV’s contributions to social sciences and humanities, emphasizing research on the region’s rich tribal heritage. “With nearly 300 tribes in Northeast India, our researchers explore their customs, values, and social impact,” he noted. Additionally, Prof. Hazarika shared that MSSV currently has around 500 research scholars engaged in various fields, further reinforcing the university’s commitment to academic excellence and societal development.
Industry Integration and Entrepreneurial Focus at MSSV
Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya (MSSV) fosters strong industry-academia collaborations, ensuring practical exposure for students. Internships are a mandatory component in several programs, including Social Work (MSW), Biotechnology, and Sociology, with students gaining hands-on experience in government institutions, private industries, district commissioners’ offices, and panchayat offices.
Placement success varies by discipline, which is very satisfactory.
Entrepreneurship is a growing focus at MSSV, with an incubation centre set to become fully operational soon. Many Yoga and Therapy graduates have successfully established their clinics and institutions. While entrepreneurial initiatives are still evolving, student interest in business ventures is steadily increasing, particularly within the Northeast region.

In the days to come, MSSV looks forward to expanding its research in space sciences, enhancing digital education for faculty, and integrating artificial intelligence into its curriculum. Strengthening industry partnerships and emphasizing cybersecurity remain key priorities, ensuring that MSSV continues to evolve as a centre of excellence in education and research.
