Early Life and Inspiring Educational Roots

Ms. Michelle Gardner was born on the campus of Boys High School, Allahabad, and has always lived within the nurturing environment of a residential school. Coming from a distinguished family of Educators, her parents and relatives were celebrated teachers and Principals, she grew up surrounded by inspirational role models who placed students’ interests above their own and led with dedication, fun-loving spirit, and tireless hard work.

From an early age, Ms. Gardner demonstrated a love for learning, serving as School Captain and successfully captaining both the Badminton and Basketball teams. She actively participated in elocutions, debates, and plays, known for her outspoken opinions and integrity. Initially aspiring to be a journalist or lawyer, she pursued Liberal Studies in Sydney, Australia, majoring in Literary Studies and Media Studies, before ultimately earning her Bachelor of Education on the advice of her father, Mr. Russell Valentine Gardner, a decision she regards as the best of her life.

Building a Legacy

Ms. Michelle Gardner’s journey at St. Jude’s School, Dehradun began 28 years ago as a Junior School Coordinator, when the School was led by mother as the Principal. During that period, the School offered education only till Class 2. Together with her mother, she played an instrumental role in expanding the School to Class 5, then Class 8, and finally to Class 12, building the institution step by step and prioritizing excellence over commercial promotion. Ms. Gardner took charge of Senior Classes while her mother oversaw the Junior Sections, both leading with vision and unity. In 2022, upon her mother’s retirement as Principal, Ms. Gardner was appointed as the second Principal of St. Jude’s School.

As the Principal

When asked about her key roles and responsibilities as the Principal of St. Jude’s School, Ms. Michelle Gardner described her day-to-day life as a dynamic and demanding endeavor, saying she “often has not had even five minutes to myself” since taking on the position. She emphasized her role in overseeing the school’s bustling calendar, ensuring every event is executed meticulously alongside her team of teachers. She is actively involved in meeting with parents to address their concerns, as well as being a point of contact for teachers and students alike.

Ms. Gardner highlighted her close collaboration with the School Office on Council matters and noted her responsibilities extend to representing the school in dealings with Government Departments and Agencies. She takes a hands-on approach by visiting classrooms during the Principal’s Period to monitor Syllabus coverage, teaching quality, and necessary corrections. Student welfare also remains a paramount concern, as she oversees all student-related issues.

Coordination plays a critical role in her leadership style; she regularly meets with academic coordinators to ensure the education imparted aligns with contemporary needs. Infrastructure development is another area under her watchful eye, where she discusses ongoing construction and maintenance work with contractors to ensure facilities are student-friendly.

Moreover, Ms. Gardner personally manages the School’s social media presence, serving as the Editor of the School Magazine, directing the Annual Play, and organizing various Inter-School Academic and Creative Festivals. She also takes charge of the Senior Debating Team and works closely to maintain the morale of the Class 4 Staff along with Estate Managers.

Balancing Life and Leadership

On a personal note, Ms. Michelle Gardner shared that she loves reading and traveling to new places. She practices yoga daily and embraces spirituality, finding strength in prayer. “I would like to begin trekking again and love being in the midst of nature,” she mentioned, expressing her desire to reconnect with nature through outdoor activities.

Ms. Gardner’s children currently live overseas, which allows her to devote herself fully to her work during certain months. However, during holidays, she dedicates her time wholeheartedly to her personal life, whether that means traveling or spending quality moments with her children. Reflecting on the balance between her professional and personal life, she said, “I have been able to balance my personal and professional life in the past because my children went to my School. It was a pleasure to see them on Campus, in the Classroom, on the Stage, and on the Games Field.”

She concluded with a heartfelt sentiment on her profession, stating, “I really think teaching is a wonderful profession because it allows one to be able to lead a balanced life. On weekends and during holidays one is able to devote oneself to one’s family.” This outlook underlines her philosophy of embracing both work and life with equal passion and care.
