Considering the total health workforce in India, nurses make up two-thirds of the total population. They are actively involved and held responsible in terms of promotion, prevention, treatment, care and rehabilitation, which are highly significant tasks considering the current crisis situation. Thus, in pursuit of producing Nursing Professionals who utilize their nursing knowledge thoroughly, using critical thinking, judgment, and skill, based on the principles of nursing, medicine, social and public health sciences – SDM Institute of Nursing Sciences, Dharwad, is a dream project of Hon’ble Chancellor , Poojya Shri D. Veerendra Heggade, which has been serving the society for over 14 years now.
Established in the year 2006 under the auspices of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational Society, only a Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery Programme was offered initially, and later was upgraded to College of Nursing in the year 2008. Further in 2011, a Postgraduate programme was added to make it a full-fledged Nursing Institute and was renamed as SDM Institute of Nursing Sciences. Subsequently in 2018, the Institute had the privilege of becoming a Constituent Unit of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University.
Located in the midway of Hubballi and Dharwad, SDM INS is built on 80 acres of serene lush green land, well connected by Air, Road and Train to major cities of Karnataka and its neighboring states. Striving on its vision of pursuing excellence in preparing quality nursing personnel, currently, the Institute offers THREE programs recognized by the Government of Karnataka, approved by Karnataka State Nursing Council, Bangalore; Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi and affiliated to Karnataka State Diploma Nursing Examination Board, Bangalore and Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University, Dharwad.

Striving on interdisciplinary learning, SDM INS motivates their very own Doctors, Physiotherapists, Dentists to actively teach and guide the Nursing Students. These valuable initiatives carried out by SDM INS, the students get first hand experience of their future professional lives, be it serving and diversifying into different areas of Nursing Practice such as Operating Room, Critical Care Departments, Women Health, Child Health, and Mental Health, and many other specializations. Students at SDM INS also get converted into confident personalities who are capable of taking up vital jobs and serving in Key Government and Elected Positions such as Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Specialist, Nurse Educator, Researcher or Nurse Manager and so on.
Being a home to all the facilities housed in an independent well equipped College building that meets the standard norms of Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi, the Institute has full-fledged Simulation laboratories such as Nursing Foundation, Adult Health including Geriatrics Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Obstetrics & Gynecological Nursing and well equipped Nutrition Laboratory. There are special manikins of which two are connected to Simpad, which enables us not only to teach, but also to conduct OSCE Examinations. Additionally, a well-furnished Library called – “AKSHARA” exists on the college campus, which has an elaborate, extensive collection of 4000+ books of National & International fame, along with various National & International Journals, and Hi-Speed Internet facilities. “Hands-on clinical experiences imparted to the students of our Institute through a 1200 bedded state- of- the- art parent Medical College Hospital, Rural Health Training Center and Urban Health Training Center”, exclaims Poojya Shri D. Veerendra Heggade also stated – “We are proud to have Four Ph.D. holders and 20 PG faculty who contribute in providing up to date knowledge to the students, and 40 Clinical Teachers who guide the students in the clinical areas contributing towards developing global nurses”.
Lastly, with SDM INS marking its successful completion of 14 Academic years in providing quality nursing education and making remarkable contributions in the field of healthcare, it is evident by now, that the Institute has become synonymous to academic and extension activities, which are aimed at fulfilling its vision and mission. Also, through instillation of the idea of practicing noble profession in an ethical way with compassion and social responsibility among young minds, in the near future, the Institute is also preparing itself towards developing a strategic curriculum to address societal-issues, so as to strengthen and expand the profession of nursing in a curated, yet effective manner.

He is a Reformer, Educationist, Philosopher, Philanthropist, and a multidimensional personality. Also a celebrated titan in the field of social service and education, Poojya Sri D. Veerendra Heggade has been quite instrumental in uplifting the educational standards throughout Karnataka. As the President of SDM Educational Society, he is the guiding spirit and driving force for the phenomenal success for more than 40 institutions. He has been recently nominated to the Upper House of Parliament which brings proud blessings to the larger SDM Family.
