The Self-Help Groups (SHGs) Revolution

SKDRDP began organising women from vulnerable sections of society in 1993. The philosophy behind women self-help groups centered on empowering woman member of family by providing her with access to adequate credit. This enables the woman to handle money, resulting in her becoming selfconfident. As her access to funds improves, she becomes a key participant in the household’s decision-making process.

Furthermore, the group dynamics, specific practices and social empowerment training would collectively empower the group member, permanently elevating her status within her family and society. As a result of this movement, women were able to improve their livelihoods, engage in income-generating activities, and contribute to their family income.

The success of SKDRDP also encouraged the rural farmers, weaker section of people to form men’s self-help groups. At present, 6.3 lakh self-help groups operate consisting 53 lakh members managed by SKDRDP and linked to scheduled bank for credit facility at very affordable cost.
