Due to continuous heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu over the past few days, schools in Cheeni will be closed on Thursday. On Wednesday evening, Chennai and various parts of the state experienced intense downpours, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas, widespread traffic disruptions, and a disturbance in normal life.
Chennai, especially, encountered heavy rains throughout Wednesday, with the intensity escalating in the evening, causing significant traffic congestion citywide. Areas like Peerkankaranai and Perungalathur witnessed severe waterlogging.
Neighboring districts, including Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram, were also affected by the incessant rainfall. In response, the district administrations of Chennai and Chengalpattu declared a school holiday for Thursday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chennai and its neighboring districts on December 2 and 3, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Furthermore, anticipating a cyclone, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team is on standby in Arakkonam town, in accordance with the cyclone warning from the IMD.
