From the Scratch
Born into a hardworking family, Dr. Baran was profoundly influenced by his father—a carpenter by profession who, through sheer dedication and integrity, rose to become a timber merchant and agriculturist. Managing a large family single-handedly, his father not only emphasized the importance of education but also encouraged business acumen, laying a strong foundation for Dr. Baran’s future aspirations.
Growing up amidst financial constraints, Dr. Baran was motivated early on to strive for financial independence and to support his family in every possible way. His formal education began in a government/municipal school where he studied in Urdu, his mother tongue. A self-described average student during the 1970s and 1980s, he took a significant leap by switching to English medium for his 10+2 science education, in which he secured a second division.
Driven by a growing interest in commerce and the desire to contribute to the family’s timber and automobile businesses, Dr. Baran pursued a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree between 1987 and 1990, graduating with first-division honors. His early exposure to trade and enterprise further inspired him to deepen his expertise in finance, culminating in an MBA in Finance from Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Andhra Pradesh, in 1993.
Journey towards SSIMS
Following his MBA, Dr. Azmathulla Baran began his professional journey with M/s Prakash Roadlines Ltd., Hyderabad, where he served as a Branch Manager for a year. However, it was his deep-rooted passion for teaching—largely inspired by his grandfather, a respected educator, and an elder brother who also chose the teaching profession—that ultimately guided him toward academia. He soon transitioned into education by joining Al-Ameen College in Bangalore.
While teaching, Dr. Baran continued to strengthen his academic credentials by earning a Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management & Industrial Relations (PGDPM & IR) and an LLB from Bangalore University. He later joined the School of Management at Adhiyamaan College of Engineering (ACE), Hosur, Tamil Nadu, where he served for five years. His growing expertise and dedication then earned him an international opportunity as a Senior Lecturer at the Technology Management Centre (TMC) in Singapore.
In 1998, Dr. Baran returned to India with a renewed vision and joined the Sri Siddhartha Institute of Management Studies (SSIMS), Tumkur, inspired by the support and encouragement of the institution’s visionary leader, Dr. G. Parameshwara, the Honourable Secretary of the institution and currently the Home Minister, Government of Karnataka. Dr. Baran recalls the personal interview with Dr. Parameshwara as a defining moment in his career—one that motivated him to dedicate himself wholeheartedly to the institution and its mission.
Starting as a Lecturer at SSIMS, he steadily rose through the academic ranks, later becoming an Assistant Professor and eventually assuming the role of Principal in 2014, following the tenures of eight principals since the institute’s inception in 1997.
As the Principal
As the Principal of Sri Siddhartha Institute of Management Studies (SSIMS), Dr. Azmathulla Baran shoulders a multifaceted role that extends far beyond classroom teaching. His core responsibilities encompass strategizing and promoting MBA admissions, recruiting and developing faculty, and fostering a vibrant teaching and research ecosystem within the institute.
A strong advocate of leadership development and collaborative learning, Dr. Baran actively initiates and oversees various professional development programs. Under his guidance, SSIMS has also introduced a wide range of value-added certification programs in cutting-edge areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Big Data, Business Analytics, Cloud Computing, and Digital Marketing, equipping students with industry-relevant skills.
In the Days to Come
Dr. Baran is deeply aligned with the vision of SSIMS—“to reach the unreached”—with the goal of nurturing potential global leaders who can bridge the gap between local aspirations and global business demands. Looking ahead, he envisions SSIMS as a center of academic innovation, leveraging technology to transform the learning experience. His plans include the integration of AI-driven learning tools, expanded industry collaboration through internships, live projects, and corporate guest lectures, and the pursuit of international partnerships for student and faculty exchange programs.

From Business Roots to Balanced Living
Outside his professional responsibilities, Dr. Azmathulla Baran remains actively engaged in pursuits that contribute significantly to both his personal and professional growth. Drawing from his family business background, he continues to be involved in management consultancy and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Baran is also deeply passionate about exploring new places, reading, public speaking, mentoring, and coaching. He enjoys networking with fellow academic leaders, engaging in community service, and indulging in plantation activities.
When it comes to maintaining a healthy work-life balance, Dr. Baran relies on his calm and logical demeanor. He practices effective time management, sets clear priorities, and embraces positive thinking to navigate challenges with resilience. He also emphasizes the importance of compromise and perspective, choosing to focus on what truly matters while letting go of trivial distractions. A routine that includes regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and adequate rest helps him stay physically fit and mentally centered.
