From Inner Growth to Institutional Greatness
There is often an intuitive sense when a good decision has been made, and when you reflect on life’s choices, education consistently stands out as one of the most valuable investments. At the core of higher education lie conceptual knowledge, technical expertise, and soft skills, all essential for success in the modern workplace. Just as important as the place where this education is imparted are the individuals who lead these institutions. Effective leadership plays a crucial role in guiding students toward excellence, both within and beyond the classroom.
Dr. Balu L, Principal of Dayananda Sagar College of Arts, Science and Commerce, represents a shining example of such leadership. He maintains a thoughtful balance in his approach to students and faculty, emphasizing value-based education while closely monitoring student progress. His vision focuses on nurturing holistic development, which is vital in today’s fast-evolving world.
His recognition as one of the 20 Most Prominent Principals in Higher Education 2025 is a well-deserved honor. It not only acknowledges his dedication and contributions but also encourages continued commitment to excellence in shaping future-ready graduates.
Shaped by Heritage
Dr. Balu L’s journey is deeply rooted in the values and traditions of the Arasu Wadiyar community, reflecting a strong foundation in respect, integrity, and cultural heritage. Raised amidst the royal legacy of Mysore, he drew early inspiration from his father, D. Lakshmi Deva Raje Urs, a highly respected official in the Revenue Department at the Divisional Commissioner’s Office. Known for his diligence, discipline, and intellect, his father’s influence was instrumental. As a young boy, accompanying him to work during school holidays left a lasting impression, quietly shaping Dr. Balu’s approach to leadership in a world marked by volatility and uncertainty.
His commitment to service began early, nurtured through active involvement in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS), where he learned the essence of responsibility, teamwork, and civic engagement. Spirituality also played a significant role in his personal evolution. Deeply influenced by the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Sharada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda, he was drawn toward a path of inner growth and higher purpose. His unwavering dedication to visiting temples, mosques, churches, and the Ramakrishna Mission became a regular part of his life.
Encouraged by his mother, Padmavathi H.K., who envisioned him as a teacher and spiritual mentor, Dr. Balu saw education not merely as a profession, but as a calling. Her constant reminder to serve with humility and purpose became a compass for his journey. His grandfather, H. C. Krishna Urs, a retired Assistant Education Officer (AEO), further deepened his sense of moral responsibility by encouraging him to emulate the virtues of Lord Krishna and Lord Rama. His sister, Mrs. Mala, added a more personal layer to his growth by teaching him the value of empathy in leadership.
Journey towards DSCASC
Before his tenure at Dayananda Sagar, Dr. Balu held the position of Academic Coordinator in the Department of Management Studies at Christ (Deemed to be University), where he played a pivotal role in shaping the department’s national reputation. Following this, he took on the challenge of launching the School of Commerce at Presidency University on May 5, 2019. Starting with just five educators and 250 students enrolled in two academic tracks, his leadership transformed the school into a thriving center of excellence. By the end of his service as Assistant Dean, the school had expanded significantly, accommodating 2,320 learners, a faculty strength of 50, and a total of nine industry-aligned programs. His appointment as Principal of Dayananda Sagar College of Arts, Science and Commerce was formalized in October 2024, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his distinguished academic career.
As the Principal
In his capacity as Principal of Dayananda Sagar College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Dr. Balu focuses on nurturing an ecosystem built on trust, inclusivity, and shared purpose. His leadership encourages a culture of collaboration, emotional intelligence, resilience, strategic foresight, and an attitude of continuous improvement.
When asked about his vision for the college over the next five to ten years, particularly in the areas of academic innovation, student empowerment, and global relevance, Dr. Balu responds with clarity and conviction.
“The primary goal,” he shares, “is to see DSCASC attain autonomous status by the academic year 2026. That will be our first major leap toward greater academic freedom and innovation.” He emphasizes that autonomy will allow for a more responsive and contemporary curriculum, tailored to evolving industry and societal needs.
Looking ahead, Dr. Balu outlines a broader roadmap aimed at transforming the institution into a Deemed-to-be University by 2035. He notes that groundwork for this transformation has already begun, with structured planning around governance, curriculum development, and quality benchmarks.
“We’re actively building strong institutional collaborations,” he explains. This includes formal agreements with both industry and academic partners, as well as initiatives rooted in social responsibility such as village adoption programs.
Internationalization is another cornerstone of his strategy. According to Dr. Balu, the college has initiated student and faculty exchange programs with global universities to foster cross-cultural learning and prepare graduates for a global workforce. “Global competitiveness is not just about rankings; it’s about mindset, exposure, and the ability to engage meaningfully with diverse ideas,” he adds.
Leadership Through Service
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Dr. Balu is deeply committed to mentoring, advancing education for both students and faculty, and engaging in community-driven initiatives. He instills these values in his protégés, believing that compassion and service strengthen one’s leadership. His journey is supported by the selfless dedication of his wife, Roopa Urs H. M., whose unwavering support enables him to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Inspired by the grace and determination of his daughter, Lahari Urs B., Dr. Balu is further motivated to embrace challenging leadership roles and pursue sustainable, purpose-driven growth.
Dr. Balu’s path reflects a life dedicated to service, learning, and meaningful connection, qualities that continue to shape his journey as an educator and guide. His example stands as a quiet yet powerful reminder that true leadership is measured not just by achievements, but by the lives touched and transformed along the way.
