Today’s free breakfast program for elementary school students attending government-aided institutions has been extended by Chief Minister MK Stalin. It was introduced in a school in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district.
It is anticipated that 2.23 lakh students in grades 1 through 5 at 3995 state-run government-aided schools will benefit from the program.
Stalin declared, “A total of more than 20 lakh children avail free breakfast,” while introducing the enlarged program. He referred to it as “a pioneering program” and said that it would “improve school attendance and cut school dropouts.”
With a history spanning more than a century, Tamil Nadu has been a leader in this, having been the first state to implement the midday meal program. Free lunches were provided to students in a few corporation schools in Madras back then.
