The majority of Indian students come to Canada each year to further their further education and finally begin their careers. Many Indian students have chosen to attend Canadian institutions rather than US universities because Canada’s immigration laws are superior at recruiting and maintaining talent, according to an NFAP research that was recently referenced in a Forbes article.
According to the NFAP study, the number of Indian immigrants to Canada increased by 326%, from 32,828 to 139,715.
However, many Indian students who wish to study in Canada may be impacted by the most recent notice issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, or IRCC.
On September 18, 2024, the IRCC published a notification announcing an additional 10% decrease in study permits for foreign students in 2025.
The objective of issuing 485,000 new study permits by 2024 has been lowered. The goal of the action is to stabilize the intake ceiling for 2026 such that 437,000 research permits—the same amount as in 2025—are given.
