In a decision that has sparked confusion and discontent across various school boards, the Karnataka government announced a one-time relaxation in the age criteria for Class 1 admissions for the academic year 2025-26.

The move comes in response to numerous requests from parents, who had expressed frustration over the strict age requirement. These parents had enrolled their children in preschool based on the previous guidelines, and they sought a modification to the age limit for Class 1 entry.

School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa clarified that children who have completed their pre-primary education and will be at least five years and five months old by June 1, 2025, will now be eligible for admission to Class 1.
