Karnataka Sets Up Expert Panel to Revamp Government Engineering Colleges as 1,402 Seats Go Vacant

The Karnataka Higher Education Department has set up an expert committee to develop a comprehensive, outcome-based student development model for government engineering colleges and to oversee its implementation. The move comes as demand for seats in these colleges remains weak.

This year, 1,402 of the 4,704 seats across the state’s 17 government engineering colleges went unfilled.

Explaining the need for the model, Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy said, “Bodies like the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) define essential Programme Outcomes such as disciplinary knowledge, problem-solving, innovation and professional ethics. Achieving these requires structured learning experiences beyond conventional curriculum delivery.”
