Educational institutions throughout the Kashmir Valley resumed operations on Monday, July 27, ending a 20-day shutdown triggered by severe weather. Students made their way back to classrooms after a prolonged break that was first caused by an intense heatwave and later prolonged by torrential rain. Meanwhile, officials in the Jammu division have ordered that any school infrastructure damaged or made unsafe by the recent downpours must stay closed until repair work is fully completed.
The closures began on July 6, when Kashmir experienced an unusually severe summer, with soaring temperatures pushing authorities to declare a 13-day shutdown. Although the heatwave subsided following heavy rainfall around July 18, persistent rain and flood-like situations forced the government to push the reopening date further, extending the break until July 26.
