A “thinking educationist” and a visionary administrator, Late Prof. N. Vajrakumar is the legendary figure responsible for transforming the Janata Shikshana Samiti (JSS) in Dharwad from a struggling institution into a premier academic hub. Serving as the Secretary of JSS for nearly five decades (1973–2022) and the Vice President of the SDME Society, he was the bridge that brought JSS under the protective “umbrella” of the SDM group.
Rejuvenating a Legacy
When Prof. Vajrakumar arrived in Dharwad in 1973, the Janata Shikshana Samiti was facing a severe financial and administrative crisis. Tasked by Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade to revive the samiti, he worked with indefatigable energy.
He transformed the JSS Arts & Science College from a moribund state into a challenging premier institution that eventually earned the prestigious NAAC A+ grade. Under his leadership, the single campus blossomed into a 42-acre educational empire housing 24 institutions ranging from KG to PG, including specialized colleges for Engineering, Law, Education, and Management.
The Hubballi-Dharwad Expansion
Prof. Vajrakumar was instrumental in diversifying the SDM presence in North Karnataka. He played a key role in establishing – SDM College of Engineering and Technology (SDMCET). He also oversaw the growth of the dental, physiotherapy, and nursing colleges, and was a driving force behind the SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, which brought state-of-the-art healthcare to the region.
Beyond the Classroom
His vision of education was always holistic. He believed in the revival and preservation of heritage, making significant contributions to Culture and Literature via Dharwad Yuva Utsav” and establishing the Kannada Research Centre. His role in shaping the National Service Scheme (NSS) earned him widespread acclaim.
Demonstrating his “human touch,” he established a dedicated housing society for JSS employees, ensuring their personal security alongside professional growth.
For his monumental contributions to education, the Maharashtra Government honored him with its highest award, and Karnatak University conferred upon him an honorary doctorate in 2011.
