More than 400 people, the majority of them minors, were detained across France on Tuesday amid ongoing student protests at high schools nationwide, according to the French interior minister.
The protests, which originated in Paris and have involved teenagers blockading their schools for several days, are rooted in grievances such as overcrowded classrooms and a shortage of teachers.
Officials reported that at least 10 teachers, several students, and 48 law enforcement personnel sustained injuries during Tuesday’s demonstrations. The education ministry confirmed that at least 400 schools were impacted by the unrest.
Images and videos circulating from the protests appeared to show bins set on fire and bus stops damaged by demonstrators.
