With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Prof. (Dr.) U S Krishna Nayak, a renowned orthodontist and the esteemed Principal and Dean of A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences.

Born on December 16, 1961, U S Krishna Nayak tragically passed away just days before his 64th birthday due to complications from pneumonia at a private hospital.

In summary, let us celebrate Dr. Nayak’s remarkable life and his invaluable contributions to the field of dentistry.

U S Krishna Nayak deeply valued the role his parents, Dr. U. S. Mohandas Nayak and Indira M. Nayak, played in shaping his journey. Both were strong advocates for education, instilling in him the foundation for a distinguished career. His academic path began at the globally renowned St. Aloysius Boys’ School, where he also completed two years of pre-university education. His foray into dentistry started at the ‘Mecca of Education’—Manipal, laying the groundwork for his illustrious profession.

For U S Krishna Nayak, the A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences was not just a workplace but a second family. Starting as an Assistant Professor, he was warmly embraced by the institution and remained a dedicated member throughout his career. Rising through the ranks—from Assistant Professor to Reader, Associate Professor, Senior Professor, Vice Principal, and Dean Academics—U S Krishna Nayak eventually led the largest Orthodontic Department in the country, a testament to his dedication and excellence.

Lovingly referred to as “The Boss” by his postgraduate students and colleagues—a moniker first introduced by Dr. Prabhat Shetty from his inaugural batch of postgraduates—U S Krishna Nayak was celebrated for his warm and approachable demeanor. Over time, this nickname evolved into “Universal Boss,” symbolizing the immense respect and admiration he garnered throughout the dental community.

On a personal level, U S Krishna Nayak had a deep love for music, whether it was ghazals, pop, or even hard rock. One of his all-time favorites was Michael Jackson’s iconic song, “Heal the World.”

Known for his disciplined approach to life, Dr. Nayak instilled the same values in his students, earning their admiration while shaping them into disciplined professionals and responsible citizens.

As we say our final goodbyes to this extraordinary individual, let us remember him in our prayers and strive to embody even a fraction of the dedication and passion that defined his life.
