Founded in 1992, SDM College of Ayurveda and Hospital, Hassan, came into being to extend the mission of the SDME Society in spreading authentic Ayurveda knowledge and healing. It builds upon the legacy originated in 1958 when Ratnavarma Heggade established the Udupi Ayurveda College with just 20 students and 10 faculty.
From its inception, the college rapidly developed teaching and clinical infrastructure, nurturing generations of Ayurvedic physicians. Its affiliation with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, and recognition by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine ensure adherence to national standards of education. The hospital attached to the college has expanded considerably, with modern facilities integrating traditional principles with cutting-edge patient care.
SDM College of Ayurveda Hassan has established international partnerships with Nippon University in Japan and Russia’s premier institutions – Sechenov University and Third Medical University. Domestically, the college has forged MOUs with leading institutions including Parul University (Gujarat), Datta Meghe Institute (Maharashtra), and is advancing collaborations with Sanskrit University (Karnataka), All India Institute of Speech & Hearing (Mysore), veterinary and agricultural universities.
The green campus, designed by renowned architect Shirish Beri, harmoniously balances nature and functionality, reflecting a modern approach rooted in classical tradition.
Community Care and Healing Initiatives
In community service, SDM Ayurveda College, Hassan actively conducts health check-ups, including advanced cardiology screenings for 720 Reserve Police Personnel, and runs health camps in
five adopted villages. Its satellite hospitals in Chikkamagaluru and Channarayapatna extend outpatient and Panchakarma services to neighboring regions. The college is a key partner in the Ministry of AYUSH’s alcohol de-addiction initiative in Channarayapatna, addressing addiction issues affecting even young girls, with government commendation urging expanded outreach.
