Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara Mass Marriage Program

For over five decades, the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara (SDM) Dharmottana Trust has pioneered a social revolution through its “Samuhika Vivaha” or Mass Marriage program. This initiative, which began in 1972 under the visionary leadership of Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, aims to curb the burden of high marriage expenses while promoting simplicity and social equality. On April 29, 2026, the tradition continues as Dharmasthala hosts its 54th free mass marriage, marking another milestone in this grand humanitarian effort.

The Philosophy of Simplicity

The core objective of the mass marriage program is to eliminate the financial stress and social pressures often associated with traditional weddings. By providing a platform where couples from various backgrounds can wed with dignity and without debt, the program embodies the true spirit of Dharma. It is a celebration where the sanctity of the union takes precedence over the ostentation of the ceremony.

A Comprehensive Support System

The SDM Dharmottana Trust ensures that every couple starts their new life with essential support. The program is completely free of cost for the participants and includes:

  • Traditional Attire: The Trust provides the bride with a saree and blouse, and the groom with a dhoti and shawl.

  • The Mangalsutra: A gold Mangalsutra (sacred thread) is provided to every bride, signifying the auspicious start of their marital journey.

  • The Wedding Feast: A grand traditional meal is served to the couples and their invited guests, maintaining the warmth and hospitality Dharmasthala is known for.

Fostering Social Harmony

One of the most profound aspects of the Samuhika Vivaha is its role in breaking social barriers. Couples from different castes and communities marry in the same venue, under the same spiritual canopy, fostering a sense of universal brotherhood and communal harmony. It is a powerful statement against social discrimination, proving that in the eyes of the divine, all unions are equal.

A Modern-Day Tradition

To ensure the success of the 54th edition, the Trust employs a meticulous registration and verification process. This ensures that the benefits reach those who truly value the spirit of a simple, sacred wedding. The ceremony is not just a religious event but a cultural landmark in Karnataka, drawing thousands of well-wishers and setting an example for philanthropic organizations worldwide
