Sharp Decline in Indian Students Heading Abroad; Canada Hit Hardest

Indian students pursuing higher education overseas have dropped significantly in 2024, with Canada, the UK, and the US witnessing the steepest declines. Data from the Bureau of Immigration reveals a 27% decrease in Indian students traveling to these three countries for education this year.

Stricter visa regulations, increased financial requirements, higher rejection rates, and diplomatic tensions are believed to have contributed to this downturn.

In contrast, alternative destinations like Russia, Germany, and Uzbekistan are experiencing a rise in Indian student enrollments.

The total number of Indian students in Canada, the UK, and the US fell by 164,370 within a year. Canada experienced the sharpest decline, with student numbers dropping 41% — from 233,532 in 2023 to 137,608 in 2024. The UK and the US saw declines of 27% and 13%, respectively.
