Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS), 157 government medical colleges have been approved in three phases, of which 108 are already functional, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar stated in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
Pawar claimed that the government has increased the number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS seats. As per the data made available by the government, there is an increase of 82 per cent in medical colleges from 387 before 2014 to 706 as of now. Further, there is an increase of 112 per cent in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,08,848 as of now.
In the first phase, the government is launching 58 government medical colleges in 20 states/UTs, 24 colleges in phase two in eight states, and 75 medical colleges in 18 states in the third phase.
