Legal education in India is evolving. Once confined to theoretical instruction, it is now expected to prepare graduates who are not only legally sound but also socially conscious, articulate, and professionally ready. In this changing landscape, Vinayaka Mission’s Law School (VMLS) located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, has emerged as a forward-thinking institution that blends inclusivity, innovation, and practical training into its core philosophy.
Bridging Gaps, Building Confidence
VMLS was established in 2021 with a clear mission of making quality legal education accessible to students from diverse social and educational backgrounds. The law school welcomes learners from across Tamil Nadu and beyond, many of whom are first-generation law students or come from smaller towns.
The Executive Dean – Mr. Siddharth Raja shares – “At VMLS, we value innovation in legal education, placing considerable emphasis on course design that addresses the identified skill gaps and experiential learning models”.
The result is a learning environment focused on empowerment where every student, regardless of background, is given the tools to succeed in the legal profession.
An Inclusive and Innovative Pedagogic Model
Vinayaka Mission’s Law School’s academic model emphasizes accessibility without compromising rigor. Recognizing the diversity of student backgrounds, the school integrates strong foundation courses, communication support, and mentorship into its law programs.
Inclusivity at VMLS begins with the Vinayaka Law Admissions Test (V-LAT), a thoughtfully designed entrance test that assesses aptitude and motivation rather than just prior academic achievement. The exam also links directly to scholarships, offering both merit-based and need-based financial support to deserving candidates.
“V-LAT is not just an entrance test,” Dr. Padmanabhan explains. “It’s an inclusive exam meant to assess motivation.” The approach ensures that financial or social limitations do not prevent capable students from pursuing a legal career.
Mentorship and a ‘Glocal’ Vision
A distinctive feature of VMLS is its mentorship partnership with Jindal, one of India’s leading law institutions. This collaboration brings global academic standards, contemporary teaching practices, and institutional guidance to the young law school.
At the same time, VMLS remains deeply rooted in its local context. This “glocal” vision is global in perspective but local in commitment and helps students aspire to international opportunities while staying connected to community needs and access-to-justice initiatives.
Evolving with Purpose
VMLS treats its curriculum as a living document, continuously reviewed and updated to stay aligned with legal developments and industry expectations. Each academic year, around 20% of course content is refreshed to maintain relevance. The Board of Studies, which includes practicing lawyers and law-firm partners, provides valuable feedback to ensure employability and practical focus.
Faculty recruitment at VMLS reflects the same balance. The team includes experienced academics from both within and outside Tamil Nadu, many with foreign qualifications, doctoral degrees, and professional experience. The school also encourages its own faculty to pursue PhDs and research projects, strengthening its academic foundation year after year.
Research and Scholarly Engagement
A law school that strongly promotes research among both faculty and students, at Vinayaka Mission’s Law School – learners engage in funded projects, independent research papers, and work through four Centers of Excellence. These centers are namely – the Center for Justice through Technology, Global Tamil Law Center, Center for Promotion of International Law, and Center for Maritime Law.
Students assist in data collection, report writing, and event organization, gaining early exposure to academic work. They are guided on writing and publishing papers in reputed journals and taught to use digital tools responsibly in research.
Learning Through Experience
Practical learning is central to the VMLS model. The school runs several skills and communication labs focused on workplace readiness, presentation, and career development.
A highlight is the recently inaugurated Legal Aid Clinic, described as one of the best in Tamil Nadu. The clinic provides a space for students to interact with real clients, conduct legal awareness programs, and assist communities in need.
Internships are another major component of the curriculum. Unlike many institutions that treat them as optional, VMLS makes internships a credit-based requirement every semester. The school has signed MOUs with multiple bar associations, including the Madurai Bar Association, creating structured internship networks across districts.
Student Outcomes and Future Directions
The first graduating batch of the three-year program has already begun to make its mark. Many alumni have gone on to pursue LL.M. programs at Jindal and other leading Indian universities. Others are practicing under senior advocates in the Madras High Court or building careers in their hometowns. Several are preparing for judicial service exams, aiming to join the judiciary in the coming years.
The five-year program’s first batch is now in its final year, and the school anticipates strong placements and further academic achievements.
A Law School of the Future
Looking ahead, Vinayaka Mission’s Law School aspires to become a national leader in inclusive and clinical legal education. The vision is to build a law school where students “learn the job while in law school” mastering both theory and practice in an environment that values ethics, skills, and service.
By combining academic rigor with real-world training and a spirit of inclusion, VMLS in Chennai is setting a new benchmark for what modern legal education in India can be: accessible, socially relevant, and future-ready.
