The Resume Is Losing Its Authority

A strong Kaggle ranking signals something specific: the ability to work with real, messy data and iterate toward a measurable result under competitive pressure. That’s a genuinely different skill from writing clean textbook code, and recruiters hiring for applied ML and data roles do treat it as a credible proxy for practical modeling ability. But rank alone isn’t the full picture. What matters more is whether a candidate can explain their approach: why they chose a particular feature engineering strategy, where their model failed, and what they’d do differently. A high rank with no ability to walk through the reasoning behind it reads as luck or copied notebooks. A modest rank explained clearly reads as real skill.

AI Fluency Itself Is Becoming a Baseline Signal

Beyond specific artifacts, recruiters are now screening for something broader: comfort working alongside AI tools. Familiarity with code assistants, LLM integrations, or basic AI/ML concepts is increasingly treated as a differentiator that helps candidates qualify faster, even in roles that aren’t explicitly AI positions. It signals adaptability in a market where the tools themselves are changing every few months.

The Practical Takeaway

None of this makes the college name irrelevant. It still opens doors, especially at the resume-screening stage. But once a candidate is in front of an actual recruiter or hiring manager, the college name stops doing the work. What replaces it is evidence: projects that show real outcomes, a GitHub history that shows real process, a Kaggle rank the candidate can actually defend in conversation, and visible comfort working with the AI tools already reshaping the job itself.
