Aiding Students to Pursue Excellence

The abruptness of the pandemic led teachers and administrators towards transitions and they were forced to build emergency learning management systems. To mitigate these challenges, it was necessary to implement learning recovery programs in institutes to ensure that slow learners receive the support they need, to catch up with the advanced learners. Xavier Institute of Engineering (XIE) took good care of the demands of the situation, and due to being a well known brand name itself, with a long history and stronger traditions, the Institute boasts of an inner energy that keeps it always up to date.

Having been found based on the prevailing currents of thought and action in the Mumbai University, but perhaps even more by the Jesuit ethos that in India also pervades 83 University Colleges, 7 major Institutes of Business Management, 22 technical and 11 research centers, and all the other more numerous high schools, from the higher secondary to the lower primary types.  It is remarkable, if one takes in only the last few years, the number of Jesuit alumni in India who are famous Indians in the fields of Politics, Law, Industry, Arts, Literature, Architecture, Science, Technology, Medicine, Sports: persons like Dr A. P. J Abdul Kalam, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, M. Hamid Ansari, Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, L. N. Mittal, Aditya Birla, Sir Ratanji Jamsetji Tata, G. P. Goenka, Adi Godrej, Jyoti Basu, Siddhartha Shankar Ray, Sourav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Amitraj, Ramathan Krishnan, Soli Sorabjee, Nani Palkhivala, Dr Homi Sethna, Alyque Padamsee, Ismail Merchant, Zakir Hussain, Raj Kapoor, Viswanathan Anand, M. C. Chagla, Julio Ribeiro, Dr Ernest Borges.

Like other Jesuit institutions, XIE uses Jesuit pedagogy not only to train the mind in logic and clarity, filling it with all the necessary information needed to act, and not only to mould the emotions and sentiments to appreciate the beauty of dance, painting, and music, but more to take care of whatever is truly human, within oneself and others. XIE offers education beyond the classroom and lab, through a variety of social programmes and continuous interactions between students, staff, and Administrators—sometimes, the latter find edification even in the students. With its vision to nurture the joy of excellence in the world of High Technology, to realize it and not leave it on the level of a dream, every effort is made to match global standards in Technical Education by interaction with Industry, by continuous staff training, and developing the quality of all, staff and students. The Jesuit drive to have “cura personalis” (taking care of each one) makes XIE deal with each Student holistically.

Imparting Quality Education

Besides serious academic work, XIE has a Gait Lab for those who suffer from Cerebral Palsy and promotes clean energy, bio-gas, wind and solar energy, Electric vehicles.  It also offers value-added courses on IoT, Cyber Security, AI, BlockChain technology, Embedded Systems, Machine Learning, Data Science, and gives an enormous amount of freedom to students to explore with their talents.  All of them are absorbed by Companies or go for higher studies abroad. The Courses offered at XIE are Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics, and Telecommunication. While answering our questions, Fr Dr John Rose SJ mentioned that- A group of our students have designed and developed a self-driving trolley and they have won the RULA International Award 2018 for this innovative and creative trolley. At least 17 of our Alumni have started their own companies and hired engineering students.

Adding to the above statement, Dr Y. D. Venkatesh, Principal, XIE, stated that- “The management of XIE which is under the Jesuits easily acknowledges that its goals could not be achieved at all without the competence and zeal of its well-qualified teaching Staff made up by persons coming from various regions and religions and cultures, and having both fidelity and commitment, combining mutual respect and individual on-going formation. The Institute’s staff retainment is 98%. There is a good demand for admissions and attempts are made that disadvantaged students are generously given places. It can be said that XIE is driven by the 4 Cs: Competence, Conscience, Commitment, and Compassion, and these advance XIE’s vision of ‘Excellence’, not as a mere ideal but something tangible to be achieved by the use of special facilities and infrastructural amenities like 24×7 lab availability for staff and students, Apple Mac lab to do programming in Swift and Go languages, labs with the latest configurations of computers, and Solar House in the making. Staff and students are also given incentives for publications and projects that are often sponsored by XIE.

Nearly all the students obtain jobs in industry, and hence relations with it are important for the Institute so that Students can benefit later on with placements and internship opportunities.  These are some of the fifty companies that come for recruitment in XIE, and industry personnel come to train the students and grant internships: TCS, Accenture, Indian Navy, Infosys, L & T, Oracle, Quinnox, Reliance Jio, TCS, Tech Mahindra, Amazon, Biosch, Samsung, Capgemini, Zensung, Zeus Learning.  The success in the field of work often depends on the personalities of the workers and XIE conducts workshops on personality development; for every semester on each subject, they are asked to give a summary of what they have learnt and they have to submit videos on it, training them in self-confidence.  Despite the pandemic, the future is bright, and for it XIE is intending to create a B Tech in Cyber Security, BlockChain Technology, and Internet of Things. The aim of XIE is that none of its students is flustered or helpless in any situation they find themselves in.
