The DNA of Innovation

The biotechnology sector is poised for remarkable growth in the coming years, propelled by professionals who develop resilient crops, essential vaccines, and innovative waste management solutions. India, home to several premier biotechnology institutes and research centers, offers students advanced academic training paired with cutting-edge research opportunities. However, when selecting a biotechnology college, it is critical to consider factors such as faculty expertise and research output, infrastructure and laboratory facilities, industry partnerships and placement track records, alongside student feedback and overall academic reputation.

Among institutions excelling across all these parameters, Thakur College of Science & Commerce (TCSC) stands out prominently. The autonomous college’s specialized B.Sc. Biotechnology program, designed under the New Education Policy (NEP), integrates core biotechnology subjects with interdisciplinary and skill-based learning. This approach cultivates well-rounded, capable scientists with a solid foundation in Biotechnology while expanding knowledge into emerging and applied areas. Since its founding in 1992 in the strategically located Kandivali East area of Mumbai, Thakur College has consistently exemplified excellence in education. Its autonomous status and NAAC accreditation further enhance its academic rigor and innovation, making its recognition as one of India’s top biotechnology institutes a well-deserved distinction.

Equipped for Excellence

Home to a well-stocked library and access to leading research journals, Thakur College boasts modern laboratories and robust research infrastructure, including 14 science laboratories. Its centralized Research Centre facilitates biological sciences research.

Biotechnology labs are outfitted with advanced equipment such as PCR thermal cycler, Gel electrophoresis apparatus, high-quality microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, centrifuges, and UV-Vis spectrophotometer.

Dedicated stations for biochemical assays, microbial culture, and DNA analysis support both curriculum labs and undergraduate research initiatives. The presence of a biosafety facility equips students for safe recombinant DNA work. The Hands-on skills of Biotechnology learners are complemented by workshops conducted in collaboration with industry partners such as HiMedia Labs.

Unleashing the Power of Scientific Inquiry

Research forms an integral part of the B.Sc. Biotechnology curriculum at Thakur College of Science & Commerce. The department organizes “Eureka,” an annual inter-collegiate competition fostering innovative biotech ideas.

In 2024, several student groups showcased research posters at an international event focused on millets and cultural heritage. Additionally, shortlisted projects progress to the University of Mumbai’s “Avishkar” convention, a prestigious research competition.

Dr. Aparna Deshmukh as the Principal Investigator, secured a grant from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India for the Foldscope initiative, utilizing paper-based microscopes for biodiversity research. Undergraduates played a vital role in collecting microbiodiversity data from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park as part of this DBT-supported study. The project facilitated academic collaborations with reputed institutes in Assam.  TCSC demonstrated the Foldscope as an educational resource in local schools by the team of faculties under Principal Dr. C.T. Chakraborty’s leadership.
