Amidst the unprecedented expansion of India’s biotechnology sector, spanning breakthroughs in healthcare, agriculture, and industry, the Department of Biotechnology at Nehru Arts and Science College stands out as a beacon of hands-on learning and industry-aligned education. Its strong focus on experiential learning, research-driven innovation, and entrepreneurial incubation not only cultivates academic excellence but also delivers a tangible societal impact. These strengths collectively make the department a natural choice for inclusion among the Best Biotechnology Institutes of India.
From Scratch
Established at Thirumalayam Palayam area of Coimbatore in 2004, the Department of Biotechnology at NASC has evolved into a thriving hub dedicated to advancing the biosciences. The department prepares students for success in today’s competitive environment by offering comprehensive UG, PG, and Doctoral programs spanning diverse specializations, including Biochemistry, Enzymology, Nanotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Immunology, and Bioprocess Engineering.
The academic framework is meticulously crafted to reflect evolving trends in both industry and scientific research, addressing areas such as Molecular Diagnostics, Drug Discovery, Microbial Technology, Bioinformatics, and Environmental Biotechnology. Guided by a team of experienced faculty with multidisciplinary expertise, the department maintains a robust research profile, consistently contributing to leading journals indexed in Scopus, SCI, and UGC-CARE.
An Immersive Experimental Hub
Boasting of a comprehensive infrastructure designed to facilitate advanced learning and research in biotechnology. A DBT-sponsored Central Instrumentation Facility provides access to sophisticated analytical and molecular equipment. Multiple specialized laboratories accommodate the diverse needs of the curriculum and research, including dedicated spaces for Molecular Biology, Fermentation, Bio-Organic Chemistry, Animal and Plant Tissue Culture, and Hydroponics.
Industry-sponsored laboratories further enrich the ecosystem by seamlessly linking theoretical concepts with real-world industrial practices. Students and researchers benefit from state-of-the-art resources such as a Bio Organic Laboratory for undergraduate studies, a Molecular Biology Laboratory for postgraduates, specialized Fermentation and Bio-Separation Laboratories, and advanced Plant and Animal Tissue Culture facilities.
Emphasizing hands-on experience, the department’s infrastructure supports innovative work with equipment such as PCR machines, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, refrigerated centrifuges, fermenters, laminar airflow units, and specialized bioinformatics software. Dedicated research spaces in Molecular Biology, Microbial Technology, Plant Tissue Culture, Environmental Biotechnology, and Instrumentation ensure that students are equipped to undertake cutting-edge investigative projects and develop industry-ready skills.
Championing Innovation and Intellectual Property
The Department of Biotechnology demonstrates a robust dedication to fostering original research and protecting intellectual property. Spearheading these efforts, Dr. N. Saranya, the Head of Department, has secured seven national and international patents.
What sets the department apart is its active encouragement of students to translate their ideas into marketable products. Through hands-on development, students acquire entrepreneurial capabilities by conceiving, producing, and commercializing innovations, spanning herbal biocosmetics, enzyme-based wellness solutions, and student-led mushroom cultivation initiatives aimed at promoting agri-entrepreneurship and nutrition security. To facilitate this experiential learning, a dedicated Production Unit was established in 2009 under the “Earn while you Learn” model. The department’s reach further expanded in 2010, when it was designated an Extension Centre of Techno Park (TBI), Kerala, providing students with opportunities to bring scientific knowledge into real-world enterprise through product manufacture and sales.
Moreover, the Department of Biotechnology has received ₹84 lakhs in funding under the DBT Star College Scheme, an initiative of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The scheme aims to strengthen science education and promote hands-on training at the undergraduate level. The fund will be used to upgrade laboratory infrastructure, purchase advanced instruments, and support student research and skill development. Dr. N. Saranya, Head of the Department, stated, “This support will enhance experiential learning and empower our students to pursue higher studies and research.”
Proven Track Record
When asked about placement and career outcomes for students in the Department of Biotechnology, Dr. N. Saranya shared an insightful perspective. “Over the last two academic years (2022–2024), our department has consistently maintained an 85% to 90% success rate in graduate transition outcomes,” she emphasized.

Breaking down these achievements, Dr. Saranya elaborated that approximately 50% of biotechnology graduates were successfully placed through campus recruitment. “Our students have been recruited by industry leaders such as Biocon, Medopharm, Orchid Pharma, Aurobindo, Waters India, and Eppendorf India,” she noted.
Further, about 30% of graduates have chosen to continue their academic journey, securing admissions to premier national institutions such as the University of Madras, Manipal University, VIT, and SASTRA, as well as to esteemed overseas universities in Malaysia, Australia, and the UK. They are enrolled in M.Sc., M.Tech., and integrated Ph.D. programs.
She also pointed out that several graduates have successfully cleared prestigious national examinations such as GATE, CSIR-NET, and ICMR-JRF, securing positions with government institutions and research laboratories.
In the Days to Come

Looking to the horizon, the Department of Biotechnology at NASC is charting an ambitious trajectory toward becoming a distinguished Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Biotechnology. At the heart of these aspirations is the creation of a National-Level Bio-Innovation Hub, envisioned to serve as an incubator for ventures in agri-biotech, diagnostics, and renewable bioenergy, which is empowered by enhanced support from agencies such as DBT, DST, and MSME.
The department is actively strengthening international collaborations with universities in Malaysia, Germany, and Canada, fostering joint research, student exchanges, and curriculum development. In line with NEP 2020, it has introduced an innovative elective series focused on Indian Knowledge Systems, exploring traditional biotechnology, indigenous medicine, and sustainable practices that harmonize ancestral wisdom with contemporary science. Advancing its academic landscape, the faculty is being trained to deliver cutting-edge programs in CRISPR, synthetic biology, multi-omics, and bioinformatics, while also customizing courses in partnership with industry leaders like L&T, Biocon, and TCS Life Sciences, with plans to launch joint certification programs soon. Committed to social responsibility, the department is expanding sustainable projects such as biofertilizer production, mushroom cultivation, and community outreach initiatives under the One Health and Rural Biotech Literacy Mission, reinforcing its holistic impact on society and the environment.
Guided by this forward-thinking vision, the Department of Biotechnology at Nehru Arts and Science College remains committed to nurturing talent, catalyzing innovation, and strengthening its role in shaping the future of the biosciences, in turn, inviting the next generation of changemakers to embark on an inspiring journey of discovery and contribution.
