Being the youngest Vice Chancellor of any Indian University, Dr. Pangrikar, with over a decade of experience in the MIT Group of Institutions, Pune, his expertise in managing projects and a Ph.D. in Strategic Management from Amravati University showcase his academic prowess. His diverse areas of focus include Cultural Diversity, Sustainable Design, Applied Economics, Strategic Branding, Consumer Behaviour, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and E-Commerce.
Humble Beginnings
Hailing from a small town where his early life was deeply influenced by strong values. Dr. Pangrikar’s parents, both educators, instilled the importance of hard work, learning, and curiosity. Sports and the National Cadet Corps (NCC) played a crucial role in his upbringing, teaching him discipline, perseverance, and teamwork.
“Growing up, my interest in academia and education was sparked by a combination of familial influence and a natural curiosity about the world around me”, exclaimed Dr. Pangrikar. “Dinner conversations often revolved around historical events, geo-political events, scientific discoveries, and philosophical debates, which ignited my hunger for knowledge from an early age”, he continued.
Dr. Pangrikar fondly remembers the most influential moment of his life when he visited his father’s research lab in VMV Amravati. The ethos he experienced and the equipment he saw there helped him understand the power of education and science, and the experiments being conducted left a profound impression on him. Moreover, he attributes his teachers for helping him incline towards the field academics, especially his Jr. College teachers.
From Academics to a Research-oriented Career
Following his commendable performance in the 10th grade, achieving a noteworthy result, Dr. Pangrikar’s academic journey took a turn during his 12th grade, where his performance was relatively average. Despite this setback, his determination to pursue higher education remained intact. He subsequently enrolled in a B.E program in Electronics and Telecommunication (E&TC), graduating with first-class honors. Recognizing his affinity for leadership and strategic thinking, he transitioned his focus to management studies, gaining admission to a prestigious management institute in India.
After completing his post-graduation studies, Dr. Pangrikar embarked on a career with HCL Infosystems, where he garnered valuable experience working on diverse projects across India. A pivotal moment in his professional journey arose when a senior colleague from Siemens introduced him to a significant industry challenge necessitating a strategic solution. This encounter ignited his interest in tackling broader organizational issues, prompting him to pursue a PhD in strategic management.
Becoming the VC
During his tenure at MIT Pune, the then director of the institute introduced Dr. Pangrikar to the subject of Telecom Business Environment, in turn motivating him to take up teaching of this subject. His mentorship was instrumental in nurturing his interest in academia and he continued to guide him throughout his early academic career.
Over the years Dr. Pangrikar’s journey at MIT Group of Institutions through diverse roles and projects has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of both the technical and administrative aspects of educational institutions. This unique blend of experiences paved the way for his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of MIT University, Shillong, where he continues to strive for excellence and innovation in higher education.
As the VC
Dr. Pangrikar and the management of MIT Shillong are committed to providing high quality education that prepares students towards addressing regional and global challenges. Also one of their top priorities has always been to integrate local knowledge and customary practices into their curriculum, progressing on the lines of NEP 2020.
As the VC Dr. Pangrikar ensures the university is observant of the unique cultural and environmental assets the Northeast holds, hence striving towards becoming an example institute in the region and beyond.
Finally, looking ahead, the Vice-Chancellor foresees MIT Shillong evolving to meet the shifting landscape, embracing technological advancements such as AI, ML, and virtual reality. Prof. (Dr.) Malhar Pangrikar fosters academic excellence, innovation, and inclusivity at MIT University, Shillong, through a liberal studies approach that promotes broad-based education and critical thinking across various disciplines. This approach is augmented by a semester exchange program that allows students to gain diverse perspectives and global exposure by studying within the MIT group and at international universities.
To instill a sense of social responsibility, the university has integrated mandatory community service projects into the curriculum, requiring students to engage in impactful social initiatives during semester breaks. On a Personal Note
Beyond his professional avatar, Dr. Pangrikar, carrying forward his adept academic sense and a strong experience as a mentor, has guided several EdTech start-ups in India. He is strongly associated with NCC holding a sergeant rank, and has played as a captain for Amravati University in Ball Badminton and Handball. Also, Dr. Pangrikar believes in manifestation and meditation, and is an active preacher of the concept called “family time is indeed quality time”, and thereby, keeps some time off everyday dedicated for his wife and daughter, while also making time for outdoor activities and sports.
