The announcement of JEE Advanced 2025 results on Monday brought a momentous achievement for gender representation in engineering education. For the first time in recent years, 22.7% of female candidates who appeared for the exam have qualified for admission to the prestigious IITs—marking the highest pass percentage for girls to date.
Of the 41,337 girls who took the highly competitive test, 9,404 cleared it successfully, reflecting a rising trend in female participation and performance.
This progress aligns with the impact of the female supernumerary seat scheme introduced in 2018. Designed to combat low and stagnant female enrolment in IITs, the initiative added extra seats exclusively for girl students, aiming to push female enrolment to 20% within five years.
With this year’s results, the initiative appears to be bearing fruit, paving the way for a more inclusive and balanced future in India’s top engineering institutes.
