Paris – UNESCO releases new resources for greening curriculum and schools on World Environment Day, emphasizing the necessity of giving youth the skills they need to take a hands-on approach to solving the climate issue.
“One of the most effective long-term levers to combat climate disruption is the greening of curriculum and schools. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay stated, “It’s time to mainstream environmental education across school subjects, at all levels of education with an action-oriented approach that helps young people understand their power to make a difference.”
Nearly half (47%) of the 100 national curricular frameworks analyzed by UNESCO in 2021 omitted any reference of climate impact. Just 23% of educators said they could adequately educate about climate change in the classroom, and 70% of youth respondents agreed.
