K V Praveen Raju’s journey in education began not from a predetermined path but from his formative years at the Hyderabad Public School. From grade one to twelve, he was immersed in an environment that balanced academics with extracurricular activities. In these early years, sports played a significant role in shaping his character, although initially more for leisure than serious competition. His genuine engagement with sports only deepened as he entered the 11th grade, where he actively participated in school teams and developed a passion for badminton. This passion for sports accompanied him through his engineering studies at Osmania University, during which he also excelled in snooker, achieving national-level recognition and selection for the World Championship for under-21.
A Serendipitous Shift to Education
K V Praveen Raju’s entry into the field of education was unplanned yet transformative. His career began in 2007 as the Executive Director of Indus International School, a role that would eventually lead to the founding of Suchitra Academy. Driven by a desire to create a lasting impact, Mr. Raju sought to deepen his understanding of educational management. His pursuit of excellence led him to earn a certification in School Management & Leadership from the prestigious Harvard Graduate School of Education and Harvard Business School. Not one to limit his contributions to education, Mr. Raju also founded the Suchitra Badminton Academy in 2016. Originally set up for his daughter and niece’s training, the academy has coached athletes from India and globally, including Indian sports icons PV Sindhu and Nikhat Zareen. This reflects his dedication to nurturing talent and his love for sports. His commitment extends beyond individual projects; he has taken on roles as the Founder Chairman of Indus Early Years and held significant leadership positions such as Vice President of TIE Hyderabad and Co-Chairman of FICCI Arise, a nationwide initiative to enhance school education.

The establishment of Suchitra Academy is a testament to Mr. Raju’s dedication to fostering a love for learning among children. Since its inception in 2011, Suchitra Academy has grown into a model of educational excellence, shaped by Mr. Raju’s experiences and insights gathered from visiting around 200 schools worldwide. These experiences have brought global best practices to the academy, ensuring a dynamic and engaging learning environment.
Initially, Suchitra Academy followed a traditional educational model. However, with a commitment to continuous improvement, Mr. Raju and his team embraced project-based learning about eight years ago. This pedagogical approach now constitutes approximately 35-40% of the academic work for students from grades one to seven, integrating extensive research, preparation, and teacher training to combine traditional and hands-on learning methods effectively.
Recognizing the evolving demands of education in the age of artificial intelligence, Suchitra Academy aims to equip its students for an unpredictable future. By blending project-based learning with conventional academic approaches, the school fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The academy caters to around 2,200 students, maintaining a student-teacher ratio of approximately 1:9.5. As the founder, Mr. Raju’s focus is on strategic leadership, guiding the school’s vision, and establishing best practices, while daily academic operations are managed by a capable team.
Resilience During the Pandemic
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges to educational institutions worldwide. When asked about how Suchitra Academy navigated this crisis, K V Praveen Raju highlighted their proactive response. “We initiated Zoom classes the day after the lockdown began,” he said. “We had already been exploring online education due to a temporary ban on school buses a few months before the pandemic, so we were prepared to transition to online learning swiftly for grades 9 to 12.” This readiness enabled Suchitra Academy to maintain the quality and continuity of education, even during the most challenging times.
To keep students engaged and physically active, the academy developed a comprehensive fitness curriculum using body-weight exercises tailored for students from grades 1 to 12. They also conducted live fitness sessions for parents and staff, organized virtual events such as online sports days, Model United Nations (MUN) conferences, talent shows, and a large-scale summer camp that saw participation from over 1,200 individuals. Understanding the importance of mental well-being during the pandemic, Suchitra Academy set up a 24/7 helpline providing counseling in various languages to each and every staff member. Mr. Raju helped host a series of webinars on online education that attracted participants from over 250 cities and 50 countries.
Despite these efforts, Mr. Raju acknowledged the significant impact the pandemic had on students’ mental health. “The emotional and psychological toll has been considerable,” he noted, emphasizing the need for ongoing mental health support. “At Suchitra Academy, we prioritize mental health alongside physical health, with seven in-house counselors dedicated to supporting our students’ overall well-being. The student counselor ratio is higher than the average American school. Our goal is to nurture students comprehensively so they can become the leaders of tomorrow.”
A Future Filled with Promise and Innovation
As Suchitra Academy moves forward, it continues to innovate and expand. Plans are underway to develop a unique Makerspace, fostering creativity and hands-on learning. The school is also preparing to build an additional block to accommodate around 500 more students within the next two to three years.
Beyond Suchitra Academy, Mr. Raju is leading the establishment of SageBrook Academy, a new venture in partnership with Whitgift School, a renowned British institution. The primary campus in West Hyderabad is slated to open next year, with a comprehensive International Baccalaureate (IB) program planned for the main campus in the coming years.
