Education has long been recognized as an area in need of reform. Many curricula require updates, and the pandemic has introduced educators to a range of new and unprecedented challenges. As Indian education continues to adapt in response to the pandemic, it is crucial to implement reforms that make the system more resilient and adaptable to future disruptions. Empowering educational leaders is key to not only improving the current state of education but also ensuring its long-term success. One such leader, Ms. Madhulika Sen, stands out for her exceptional 46-year career in education. As the Senior Education Advisor at Tagore International School, she has played a pivotal role in transforming the institution from a modest single-story school into a respected educational powerhouse. Her dedication and leadership have rightfully earned her a place among India’s 25 Most Inspiring Education Leaders 2024.
A Journey of Progressive Leadership in Education
Ms. Madhulika Sen attributes her progressive upbringing to the values instilled by her family, particularly her father, despite coming from a conservative Agarwal business community. With five sisters and one brother, she was never treated differently from her brother. Her father emphasized independence, encouraging his daughters to make their own decisions, pursue education, and achieve financial independence.
Ms. Sen holds a B.Com (Hons.) from Shri Ram College of Commerce, a B.Ed from the Central Institute of Education, and an MA in Economics from Punjab University, complementing her rich personal and professional life.

Entering the classroom at the age of 22, she quickly realized her ability to connect with students and leave a lasting impression. This marked the beginning of her passion for teaching.
From Teacher to Leader
Ms. Madhulika Sen joined Tagore International School in 1978 as the first trained teacher, at a time when the school only went up to the 8th grade. In 1979, the school appointed its first Principal, and by 1986, Ms. Sen’s seniority among the trained teachers earned her the position of Vice Principal.
Tragically, the Principal passed away unexpectedly in December 1995, and Ms. Sen stepped into the role of Principal, a position she held with dedication until her retirement in 2017. Beyond her administrative duties, Ms. Sen played an instrumental role in shaping the school’s culture and infrastructure. From establishing the ‘House system’ and launching the student cabinet to organizing outstation trips, Saturday Performing Arts classes, and contributing to the design of the school’s physical layout, her involvement was comprehensive and visionary.
Even after retiring, Ms. Sen continues to contribute to the school’s growth and development, remaining actively involved as Senior Education Advisor.
Overcoming the Pandemic
Just like every other institute even for TIS the pandemic came sudden and with its own implications, but Ms. Madhulika Sen and her team swiftly took action to ensure a smooth transition to online learning. By March beginning, the school had already begun training teachers on the necessary IT skills for virtual classrooms. Although the official school closure occurred on March 23rd, online classes had already commenced by the 16th. Ms. Sen ensured that no student was left behind, especially those from the Economically Weaker Sections, by providing devices such as phones and Ipads, donated by parents, to those who lacked access, enabling seamless continuation of education without any major disruptions.
Eventually, when students returned to physical classrooms, the focus returned to regular academics, minimizing concerns around screen addiction during school hours. However, Ms. Sen and her team remained proactive, advising parents during orientations to regulate screen time at home. While project work often required the use of computers, parents were encouraged to monitor their children’s usage closely.

Ms. Madhulika Sen emphasizes that modern educators must focus on more than just academic achievement. She believes it is crucial for students to develop both soft and hard skills, understand the concept of inclusivity, and be aware of the less privileged members of society, as well as their own role in improving their conditions. Ms. Sen advocates for a holistic education that goes beyond academics, encouraging students to engage with diverse cultures, show sensitivity towards marginalized groups, and become confident communicators capable of competing on an international stage.
