Tamil Nadu will continue to implement the ‘no-detention policy’ up to class 8, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi announced on Monday.
He criticized the Centre’s decision to permit schools to detain students in class 5 or 8 if they fail to pass exams, describing it as a significant obstacle for children from economically disadvantaged families in pursuing education without disruptions. The move is “regrettable,” he added.
As per officials, the union government has abolished the ‘no-detention policy’ for classes 5 and 8 in schools under its jurisdiction, allowing students who fail year-end exams to be held back.
The Minister clarified that Tamil Nadu does not adhere to the National Education Policy and assured that the Centre’s decision will not impact schools in the state, except those under the union government’s authority.
He emphasized that there is no need for confusion, as Tamil Nadu will maintain its current system.
