Thus, laying a bright spotlight on one of the renowned engineering education hubs of our country – Thadomal Shahani Engineering College (TSEC), comes out as a committed entity that was founded with a vision of giving back to society – world-ready engineers of tomorrow.
Established in 1983, Thadomal Shahani Engineering College (TSEC), was founded by Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board. The College is recognized by the Government of Maharashtra, and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), while also being Affiliated to University of Mumbai. TSEC offers a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) Degree program in Artificial Intelligence and data Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication and Chemical Engineering. Additionally, the College offers Ph.D. programs in the subject of Information Technology, Computer Engineering, and Electronics & Telecommunication, where presently TSEC is enrolled with 40 research Scholars.
Being a hub of excellent academic ambience, TSEC motivates all its students to work rigorously towards succeeding as engineers who are not just experts in their domains, but also have brief knowledge of the engineering field. Emerging as a go-to engineering college in the city of Mumbai, TSEC boasts of a mechanism, which helps the College understand Technology marketplace and its demands. Thus, the College has incorporated new competency development processes by training teaching faculties and acquiring devices and equipment of higher order on a perpetual basis.

A college that is hugely successful in placing graduating students in leading enterprises and facilitating them for higher studies of choice, TSEC has a strong history of performing to its fullest potential with best of class practices. “Always keen on establishing quality systems and procedures in academic settings, we have a system in place (Training and Placement Cell) to identify emerging/thrust areas in engineering and integrate them in the course curriculum”, shared – Dr. G T Thampi, the principal of TSEC. Continuing on his above point he added – “We introduced courses like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Blockchain Technology in tandem with the University to be abreast with nascent technologies”. Through a brief conversation with the principal, Dr. Thampi also laid focus on how TSEC is gender agnostic and all-inclusive haven of inclusivity, where pupils thrive and emerge as productive entities over a period of four years of engagement.
Every day discourse at TSEC revolves around facilitating pupils to go up in the productive value chain and experience engineering in all its forms, be it – curricular, extracurricular or co curricular. Not only are the students pushed to break barriers and grow beyond their set expectations, even the onboard faculty members are facilitated with Faculty Development Programs. Additionally, the students of TSEC take part in sensitization sessions and orientation programs with an aim of developing competencies and proficiencies. Moreover, across all the Engineering Streams offered at TSEC, the College strives to help learners evolve as productive personnel with the right attitude. Regular events such as the Hackathons, Social outreach programs, and Sports activities help students learn about the invaluable treasure embedded in our cultures and legacies.
As we all know that Coding promotes logical and analytical abilities, enhances entrepreneurial and problem-solving skills, and gives opportunities to become future entrepreneurs, TSEC as an institute believes in guiding students to processes which help build competency in coding. In this very pursuit, the College exposes students towards getting a hang of coding through classroom engagement, practice sessions and nudging them to develop an interest in coding through online portals. Also, in order to motivate and inculcate coding proficiency in students of TSEC, “TSEC Code Cell” & “TSEC Code Storm” societies are formed. These societies are student bodies that aim to nurture a keen interest in programming within the students of TSEC and enhance their coding skills. Besides, students are encouraged to participate in various coding competitions conducted at state and national level by government agencies like Smart India Hackathon and IT/consulting companies. Adding an important point on this topic, Dr. Thampi stated – “Being the national level winner of AICTE conducted Smart India Hackathons (SIH), Ernst and Young (E & Y), JP Morgan Chase, Myntra (27 lakhs pay package Pre-placement offers given to the participating students) are clear evidences of our successful practices in this regard”.

Having more than sufficient infrastructural facilities both Brick and Mortar and digital, TSEC boasts of its Centre of Excellence in nascent technologies. The TSEC campus also houses The TSEC Library which has over 42,745 volumes with a total of 10,287 titles. The College considers the library to be a vital learning resource and updates it regularly to include the most recent books and periodicals. Furthermore, to cater to the needs of aspiring graduates, the central computing facility is equipped with robust instrumentation, control panels, intelligent board with high end internet connectivity. Many seminars, workshops, hackathons and technical events have been successfully executed in this lab. There are about 130 client nodes with excellent internet connectivity. Also, situated in a location which is easily accessible to the nearby bus and train stations, 24-hour transportation facilities are available at TSEC, and a medical facility in close vicinity of the College.
The impressive industry-academia connections existing at TSEC go beyond just facilitating quality internships and placements, but also, have helped the College carry out a multitude of activities based on the several MOUs signed. The Engagement with industry is reciprocal and symbiotic, and only the Best of class firms and businesses visit the campus and offer placements of higher order. They also offer paid internship and pre placement offers to our students at 3rd year level. Top companies such as Amazon, Ernst and Young, JP Morgan, Deloitte, Deutsche Bank, Quantiphi, TCS, Infosys, Accenture, LTI, BNP Paribas, Capgemini and many more visit the campus to recruit students. The placement being a function of market driven forces it is directly connected to the world economy & the economy of the country.
Lastly, summing up the whole conversation the Principal Dr. Thampi shared a point on the loans and scholarships provided at TSEC – “Large number of students are availing government scholarship as members of economically weaker section, Family income less than 8 lakhs are eligible for the same”. “Institute also gets donations for giving scholarships for needy students who are also regular in academic activities”.

Leading TSEC as the principal since the last 13 years, Dr. Thampi holds a Ph.D. Technology in the field of Business Process Re-engineering. He has a solid 36-years of service with the University of Mumbai. Apart from leading TSEC and its students in general, Dr. Thampi has guided 20 students from different universities to get their respective Doctorates. He has so far published 5 books, filed a few patents and contributed 80 research papers. Currently, he is a vital committee member of University of Mumbai in the subject of Information Technology.
